Hello everyone,
I am currently a first year student at a liberal arts college and on the premed track. I looked at some summer research/clinical opportunities and all of them required some sort of a recommendation letter or references from professors. I have taken so far intro bio and intro chemistry, and did moderately well, B+ and A-. Although I did relatively well, I cannot really claim that I know my professors that well, even though they are extremely willing to write recommendations for us and even offer to do so. However, I did established a good relationship with my lab instructors. I know that it is not typical for students to ask for recommendations or references from lab instructors as they do not hold PHDs, but because I am in a small liberal arts college, my lab instructors all hold master's degrees and have much experience in teaching. I have also prepared cover letters and resume. What should I do? Thanks in advance for the advice.

You should just ask the professor to write you a rec letter and if they need to they could speak with your lab instructor to talk about your personal strengths and weaknesses.

You could also have your lab instructors write you the rec letter and have your professors co-sign it, assuming the lab instructor is teaching the lab portion of that professor’s class.
