Understanding the UMD Admissions Process

Any explanation for my son not being notified of his admission status? He submitted it on 10/9…all confirmed to have been submitted.

@SoofDad is it possible to enroll in honors program or in the scholars program in the sophomore year(in case one doesn’t get into both of these while applying).

@Zepodes - I think it is possible, at least with Honors. Look at Admissions on the Honors website

http://www.honors.umd.edu/

Thanks u @SoofDad . One more doubt, are intl students eligible for the scholarships that are provided to currernt umd students( like Banner/key)

@Zepodes - Eligibility for the B/K is limited to students admitted to the Honors College and there are only 400 B/K scholarships (full and partial). As far as I know, the other scholarships are possible for everyone who applies by the Priority Deadline - Nov 1. Just be advised that UMD is a Public University and does NOT give out large numbers of scholarships.

Is there any possibility of getting a scholarship in sophomore?

There are Departmental Scholarships that you can apply for. I don’t know much about them.

Ohh, ok. Thanks @SoofDad

@Zepodes Here is a list of departmental scholarships. Just click on the department that your major falls under for the list to see how many there are. I don’t know how it works in other departments, but in engineering, you submit one application in the spring and they consider you for all possible scholarships to be awarded the following year. http://advancement.umd.edu/celebration/listScholarships.php

Thanks a lot @maryversity . Just a small query, is the majority of the scholarship mentioned in the link also available for international students or only for US citizens.

Sorry, I have no clue…I would contact the relevant department directly to ask that.

Does applying RD basically mean you have no chance with average stats?

Are all scholarships given out in the ED process? Or are some offered to RD applicants? Also, any idea what percentage of acceptance offers are made in the ED phase, especially in engineering/computer science?

@CSDad123 - UMD does not have ED. It has EA, which is non-binding. UMD calls it the Priority Deadline. Only those who apply by the Priority Deadline are eligible for Merit Scholarships and Special Programs. I do not have any EA acceptance percentage numbers, but I do believe it is higher than the RD percentage.

Does anyone know what are the most important criteria used to select students? Is it primarily based on GPA or do they take a holistic approach?

Their criteria are on their website - they are holistic (ior at least claim to be). Here’s the link https://www.admissions.umd.edu/apply/factors.php
