Underwear

Word S gets from EVERY mid he has talked to is "DON'T BOTHER BRINGING THAT STUFF"... That's it's basically a pacifier (current mids opinion, mind you) for those kids and moms/dads that feel like kiddo needs to take "something" along with them. Bag will be hauled all the way through the intake process, opened somewhere along the line, with the ability for them to take out (very quickly, from what he hears) his deo, soap/shampoo, toothbrush/paste and hand shaver (not electric)...all to be shoved into his seabag, cellphone and charger to be handed to cadre, and wristwatch to head somewhere else, and then the bag goes into storage until PPW in August, when he will then hand it back to us full of whatever else he felt he needed to take but really didn't need. Current mids here 1/c, who will be a regiment commander, and several stellar 2c's) have said that one of the points of the 8 weeks is to know how very little you need to depend on mom/dad and creature comforts you've enjoyed/taken for granted for the past 17-20 years, and that you really can (and darned well better learn to) survive on what the Navy provides. Advice we have heard is (empirically) do not take the list. Instead, send a pair of all white underarmor boxers (or similar for women) in the first three care packages, and move on...
We have also heard, totally, to cross the threshold wearing what is recommended you wear (i.e. NOT flip flops...), and parents/family should also wear appropriate clothing (USNA does have expectations of how parents/family will dress/behave while on the Yard).
So, S (who is making this decision WITHOUT mom and dad), from what I last heard, is taking advice of current mids he has talked with (none of who got flamed on for NOT taking the stuff, and trusting that they are NOT setting him up for failure on day one...), and saving the expenditure (thank you dear...will afford a nice gift certificate for use during AY liberty to local Annapolis restaurants instead) of $200-$400 worth of stuff that won't get worn/used (as he'll likely be a different size by August, anyway...). Regardless of what any Plebe does, the yelling will commence by at least 1930 hours directly following Evening meal formation, when, as the schedule says "Begin Plebe Summer routine"... (oh my....)
See you all there, with my S, who's pack/duffle will have gone commando....

LOL. I had a classmate at NAPS show up to NETC wearing a T-shirt with a huge marijuana leaf on it.

You can imagine the reaction THAT got! :D

"Really sir...that's just oregano in my toothpaste!!!"...

Yes...flame on... egads!

The yelling started a whole lot earlier than 7:30 pm! In fact my plebe said the evening after they marched back in was fairly calm and then lights were out around 9:45 pm. That was also what we were told by one of the Chaplains that we were talking with right after they marched back into Bancroft.

That is very true however basically not followed much. There was plenty of inappropriate dress by USNA standards at much of the Plebe Recognition events - jeans at dinner, jeans, short-shorts, flip-flops at recognition ceremony, you name it we probably saw it!. What one person's definition of casual and the next are two entirely different interpretations!

Have to agree - take cell phone - calculator for validation tests - shot record just in case - and moms if it just makes you feel better throw in a change of undies, but trust us it is only for you - your plebe to be will not need them!

Do not take anything that you would be disappointed if it went missing over the summer i.e. don't wear that favorite TShirt....

I will chime in and second jmwrites and profmom2 (with one exception....boxer briefs from abercrombie go for about $28 - each!...unless you order on-line- http://www.abercrombie.com/anf/onlinestore/ ...go to men's underware for the low-rise athletic briefs- $22- but those are for the shorter ones.... the regular length only available in stores for $28- and if you see a sale, do let me know! ).... but even here, the "moose" does draw attention.... ask me how I know!!!

no need for anything other than basic toiletries (sample sized), calculator(wrapped in bubble wrap), running shoes and cell phone/charger. The rest is totally not needed and will not be used- you will get the packed backpacks handed back to you come PPW with everything else intact!

NO logos on shirts. Even the tiniest gator or pony will be noticed.... and commented on! (as me how I know ;) )
absolutely no flip flops. (ask me how I know that one. )
for those who were around this time last I-Day, the infamous story of the thorpedo's flip-flops are now part of CC and USNA lore! :o

Everything else is just a carepackage away- honest!

HA .. I love that flip flop story!

Nurseypoo, I owe you some chocolate for bilging you about Ethel M!

^^^^Ethel M?

School me!

I, too, love the flip flop story.

Ethel M is the store with the chocolate lounges :)

Tube socks......where are y'all getting tube socks? Finding plain white, no heel, no logo tube socks has proved a challenge. Crew socks, no problem but it SAYS tube. Egad.

Underarmour sells "boxer briefs" which are close fitting like tighty whities but with a bit longer leg to prevent chafing. Will these do? Went to the parent's club sent off picnic and this is what everyone recommended. Yes, I was talkin' underwear at the picnic :) Spider was off talking with other candidates and current plebes so I had my big chance. All the other new moms wanted to know too!

Females can find some nice cotton underwear at GAP Body. We also bought some cheap things at Target that were thrown away at the end of plebe summer. After the summer some female plebes like to splurge on fancy underwear, manicures, quality purses/shoes that conform to uniform regs, and a beautiful ring/watch to wear with SDBs, mess dress, etc.

Tube socks- Wal Mart

Spidermom- you sound like me! Waiting until he's out of earshot and then getting info. I love it!!

The boy's picnic is today, but he's flying and had a choice. The flying won. He's very close to his check ride and wants to finish before he goes east. I wanted to go to the picnic. Oh well.

Underarmor is GREAT!! I know they have some in the NEX across the Severn. Both of mine got some there last summer for soccer camp.

To bring up an old subject again..

Is one of the benefits of bring the extra undies on I-DAY due to the fact they can leave them in the inspection areas untouched and the ones they actually wear are in the not-inspected areas? And you can only do this if you have brought the extras with you? Does any one know if that is a helpful reason for bringing the underwear on I-Day? Does that make any sense?

And are you guys remembering to send a small flag for "mutiny" or so there is no mutiny.. ??

The flag and small stand should be sent with the first care package and not brought to I day. They can be purchased in The Mid Store if you are mailing your care package from I Day

Don't bother bringing the extra undies with you, they're just going to sit, unopened, in the backpack for the summer. Wait and put them in the first care package. That way the plebes will have figured out where to put them. Remember, they're going to have to learn to fold and stow all the issued gear and they may not have room for them right away.

Seriously, all they need is a cell phone/charger, running shoes (if they prefer their own) and a calculator...

sorry folks, put it's tighty whities until after Plebe Summer.

Also have to agree with Profmom...the things some people wore (and I hate to say it, especially the girlfriends)... pretty amazing. Too bad they didn't have some kind of a dress code for parents......

Of course, if you're dressed from head to foot in Navy stuff, you're good to go!

Don't forget to look for Navy Mom, Dad and Grandparent T-Shirts and polo's
