If your child has an iPhone, the app “find my iphone” will track it down if misplaced, and allow you (or your child) to remotely lock it, and even remotely wipe the data. It’s a good idea to download it to the smartphone, and turn on location.

There’s also a “find my iPad” app, but I don’t think may BS students are toting around iPads. IPhones and laptops, yes. (or am I wrong?)

New Hampton issues all students iPads.

At parents weekend this year, I don’t think I saw many kids withOUT iPads, and the school will be incoporating them into the curriculum next year.

…bonus is that school is talking about distributing many textbooks via iPad next year for a nominal licensing fee which will be a huge savings on one of the most onerous of BS “extras”.

Oh, so I was wrong! Hmm. Do the kids have an iPad instead of a laptop or desktop? Or do they use both? Do they compose papers on their iPad? Do they use the onscreen keyboard, or do they use a wireless keyboard?

Will the iPad + e-textbooks be less expensive than laptop/desktop + printed textbooks?

It would certainly be easier to carry. On the other hand, how many iPads survive daily life in the hands of a teenager? Do they get dropped, sat upon, stepped on, or infected with viruses?

My observation is that the iPad is in addition to laptop/desktop. Laptop/desktop used for homework, iPad used more casually/portably (e-mail, FaceBook, games, Skype, videos, etc.). Keyboard can be either onscreen or wireless. Ottercase has ensured survival for over a year in DCs case, no mishaps. Rumor has it that school is providing iPads with tuition increase. They are currently running a pilot in one subject area. Not sure if kids who already have one will have them retro-fitted for school use, or if they get a new one. No details yet.

@VelveteenR - which school are you referencing (if you don’t mind disclosing)?

I’ll disclose when I have details.

Miss Porter’s required incoming new girls to purchase iPads starting this year. This is addition to a laptop. Many of DD’s textbooks are e-versions and my impression is that she is using it very heavily for school–lots of use of apps for various purposes.

However I think this thread IS jinxed. Right after I read it a few days ago, DD called distraught: some girls were dancing around in her room and somehow here iPad was stepped on, cracking the glass. She thought it was in a safe place, has always taken extremely good care of it, but there you go. We’ll be paying for the repair over spring break.

This thread is a jinx. My college age daughter was told by the Genius bar she hyper-extended her laptop and the monitor is a bit off ($400 to fix it - I’m not convinced she’s the cause). And right after I read this thread I sat on my iPad which was on the couch. It’s fine, but I’m going to spritz some holy water before reading these posts again! :)

Maybe it’s not the thread. Maybe it’s Apple…just sayin. ;)

Try to miss the iPad.

Mercersburg will be requiring ipads of all students in the fall.

zp

:) (although at my age, anything requiring good eyesight and motor function require advance planning so I can find my glasses)

I find the “extras” are endless. And as a parent of a BS boy and a girl, I can say that girls are more costly. The prom dress alone…

They’ve been mentioned here. Also (maybe some mentioned them already) voice or instrument lessons. I find the travel costs and visiting costs for a child going far away quite significant. Then, (I agree wholeheartedly with SevenDad) there’s the parent transportation and hotel/motel costs for travel for sporting events, concerts, etc., etc., etc. Not that we don’t love going, but these all represent substantial expenses.

^ ^ tigerdad, that raises an interesting point. How often do the parents here - the ones NOT within easy driving distance of the school - go to sporting events, concerts, etc? In general over the course of the school year, how many trips to the school do you make? How many events do you miss because it is just too expensive?

FWIW: I don’t remember my parents visiting me at all in the two years I attended Andover 40 years ago. They did attend graduation. I lived in Kentucky at the time.

What current behavior is these days, I don’t know…
