I've read that taking a gap year does not harm your chances to get into college, and can even help, but these articles are usually followed by stories about people who've done extraordinary things with their year off. What if you just take a year off to work at home?

Also, I've been thinking about going a month each to Nepal and Mongolia during my time to teach English as an attempt to really do something worthwhile with the year. This would cost me around 3000 USD though, does anyone think it would be worth it?

dude u shudnot be paying for volunteering
I live in India and you could just come to one of these 3rd world countries and easily find work.

I am in bombay..taking a gap yr as you know after finishing high school [science].
i sometimes work as a freelancer.. if u even decently good at writing go to any good newspaper ..they will mostly hire you coz as you know there are so many papers coming up[DNA, Hindustan times in here] that they are facing a shortage..
freelancin looks really good on d resume and qualifies as work experience.
u wanna do volunatary service??ders loads u can do.. temme if u wanna hear more abt volunteering

patna.. man hard 2 find stuff there.. you ever plan to come to bombay then i can help u out..
ok btw there is global village project by habitat in many villages in india..check at their site.. my counsellor said that helping out in such stuff earns you a lot of brownie points

i have got a 2100 and done loads of voluntary service
global village is:you go to an undevolped area with other volunteers and build houses out there. they have decided couple of places to go to all over india .one of them is karjat where ill be going.
what i meant was that the counsellor said that it looks really good if you do voluntary stuff especially of this kind..
other than this, you should just join any ngo that interests you and put in a lot of hours in it and try to rise in the hierarchy[to show leadership skills]
