It’s completely fair. Schools have said they wish to diversify their student bodies to enrich the atmosphere of their school in an increasingly globalized world. It would be boring if everyone were white or asian. The losers who didn’t get in are the only ones bitter about affirmative action. Get over yourselves.

I’d just like to point out that while AA CAN help minorities who are less qualified than whites (or Asians), AA does NOT mean that unqualified minorities are “taking” the spots of qualified whites or Asians.

This is an old thread.

Nevertheless, I’d disagree with Romulus. It’s not fair for race to play any role in admissions. Diversity is great, but it doesn’t come from the color of someone’s skin. Diversity comes from the individual, the culture they’re a part of, and who they are. If you want a truly diverse community then you need to evaluate on a case by case basis based on the individual. Race doesn’t have any relation to character, personality, etc.

I’m fine with colleges wanting diversity, but racial diversity isn’t the only type of diversity. AA breeds resentment, hatred, and lowers the achievements of URM in the eyes of many. Socioeconomic status would make more sense than race to play a role in admissions.

The problem is that society discriminates against URMs in ways that go beyond socioeconomic status. [One study](<a href=“http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2008/08/09/study-black-man-and-white-felon-same-chances-for-hire/"]One”>http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2008/08/09/study-black-man-and-white-felon-same-chances-for-hire/) has shown that black males get job callbacks at the same rate as white male felons, even when they have literally identical qualifications. So you’re right that race shouldn’t affect admissions, but not doing AA won’t stop race from affecting admissions.

I’ll close this thread (it IS very old) and link to the current FAQ thread on such issues:
