Sorry, this may seem like a stupid post, but it's about graduation time, the deposits are sent in, and I'm starting to get cold feet a little bit. It's mainly just been from the consistent complaints that I've heard about class size, underfunding and red tape in the administration that prompt this. I just want to know if students feel that those downfalls really detract from the university experience, and if so, to what extent.

what exactly does red tape in administration refer to?

as with any university there will be problems.. thats why you have to go where you feel happy and will feel happy

Starting from the time I first got interested in McGill, I have met/heard of dozens of people who went to McGill and love(d) it. I spoke with a few of them and none had any major complaints.

you'll find that in any large university- but seriously ask any mcgill student like myself if they love studying in montreal and they'll tell you its totally worth it.
mcgill's admin isn't AS bad as they make it- some universities are far worse!
a mcgill education is a bargain and a challenge, and the degree will be worth it.

It has its problems. but as a transfer student from a good US school, I can assure you, even the so-called "best" of them have their problems.
Class sizes depend on what you are doing. Even then, a large class side isnt always a bad thing. They have advantages.
As to contacting teachers, pretty much every teacher i've found here has been VERY willing to help students. I'm in one of the smaller faculities (the largest small facuty, I believe... music), but I have heard similiar things from friends in other faculties as well.

The redtape.....well, its fun to laugh at it. Yes, I won't kid you...there is alot of red tape and are alot of "course override forms" that you'll see in your lifetime here. Personaly, a little more than my previous school had... but its still not all that bad. People love to complain about it, but it really isn't that bad at all!

As for myself, despite it's problems here and there, there is no place I'd rather be. The school is excelent, and quite the university experience, and the city is absolutely fantastic. I think you'll enjoy it here... I can't think of anyone I know here who truely dislikes it. I'm sure there are a scant few, as there always are realisticaly, but everyone I know here absolutely loves it, or loves it more than they wish to admit. :)

Thanks to everyone who replied. I don't think I can wait until August 21 to go up.
