My daughter is in a state show February 8th through 11th. Do Chicago Unifieds start on Monday the 6th or do they start on Sunday the 5th? Also, is it possible to squeeze in all of the colleges to see in 1 day - Monday ?
Depends on how many schools but one day would be pushing it. Maybe go to LA or NYC instead. ???
@KPike320 in 2015, some schools held dance calls on Sunday. Also, unofficial unified schools had auditions over that weekend. How many you can fit in 1-2 days depend on the block of time each school requests. How many schools are you trying to fit in at Unified?
I’m honestly not sure… I’m still confused about the whole thing!!
are the chicago dates of 6-9 correct, because the unified website is saying 8-10?
The Unified website does indeed state Feb. 8-10. This has changed. Any clarification from anyone else? This totally changes our plans. :-S
That is for 2016. The 2017 dates are not updated yet.
See post #1 in this thread for 2017 dates for all locations. @drjohn (from Otterbein) is the authority on all things Unifieds on CC. His dates are correct.
What can be tricky are the schools that piggyback on Unifieds by holding auditions in the same cities in the same timeframe. Some schools may choose to start their auditions a day or 2 before the official Unified dates. That is why it is so important you check with each school to which you want to apply to find out their specific audition dates and locations. There is no short cut. You must check with each school individually and you must schedule your audition for each school individually.
There’s a new website that lists tons of college auditions. Looks useful. www.collegeauditions.org
Okay- this is bizarre! I am helping a few people through the Musical Theatre audition process. So NY Unifieds are the weekend of Jan 21-22, 2017. I have seen that on several Unified schools websites. BUT, I checked for Carnegie’s dates AND Boston University’s (I know they aren’t Unified schools- but normally are in town during Unifieds) and they are both coming to NYC the week AFTER Unifieds- that weekend of Jan 28th-29th…what? I think the wires got crossed somewhere. Just makes it very difficult for someone who wants to audition for them, and now can’t because they can’t stay an extra week in NYC…
Well that’s weird @stagedoormama ! Maybe it’s a screw up?
Hope so for the students sake! I called and spoke to BU myself and they said the dates listed on website were the dates (and then we spoke about how it was strange that it wasn’t the same time as Unifieds)

And I told the student to call Carnegie tomorrow to inquire about what they can do-

I put the links to both audition dates for the schools^, but not sure if CC will allow them/leave them.
Any advice on how best to schedule unified auditions? So far we’ve applied to 2 schools that we want to do at unifieds and they are just asking what date. It looks like we won’t get an exact time for a while so how is that going to work? Do the schools let you switch around later if you have two on the same day and they conflict or is that a problem? I think I remember reading an old post where times were conflicting and they were just out of luck. If that’s how it works though, we could only request one a day and that doesn’t seem right. Can someone please explain the best way to try and do at least 2 or 3 a day? I am guessing the really popular ones like ccm and CMU would be the hardest to switch so do them on different days but does anyone know if that’s true or what other schools are hard (or easy) to switch? One school we applied to says we will not get a date until December so I am worried about having a mess later if we choose poorly now. Thanks!
Most of the schools my daughter applied to got back to us fairly quickly (but she didn’t get most applications in until October) and had us choose a specific time.
I think a few (?webster maybe) had us pick the date we wanted and then we either got a phone call or directions how to schedule a specific time within a few days to a week or two.
I remember asking the exact question you are - how can we say we want Saturday for three schools if we don’t know the timing. It all worked out. We had to move one up by half hour to fit another in but not a problem for most of the schools if done in advance.
CMU and u arts were the ones that filled fastest for my daughter and hardest to get spots at. Those could not be switched. CMU asks you to block out a morning or afternoon for them. You probably won’t need that whole time - but it is blocked out in case you do. There is a lot of waiting with them.
I don’t know about CCM but hear they fill fast. I know kids that didn’t get a spot last year.
I “mapped” out the ideal schedule for us at Unifieds. (Example: friday afternoon CMU, Saturday morning- Webster and u arts; Saturday afternoon pace, and so on). As we scheduled, I used it as a guide and we pretty much fit in everything my daughter wanted to.
If you have dance calls factor time for those in too.
Good luck
A few suggestions:
- Schedule the schools most important to you first.
- To start with, only schedule 2 per day, one for morning and one in the afternoon.
- Once you have those set, fill in remaining available times with schools lower on your list.
- Make a list of schools you might consider doing a walk-in for should you end up with extra time on your hands during Unifieds. Make sure you find out if/when they will post sign ups for walk ins and make sure to get your name on that list.
If you do all of the above you should easily schedule 2-3 per day.
Thanks @bfahopeful - Webster is one of the two we’ve done so that’s good to know. It didn’t specify when they would do the time (that we saw anyway) so I’m glad to hear they’ll hopefully nail it down pretty quick. It looks like several of my d’s schools are asking for bigger chunks of time so I’d like to schedule them in her preference order to make sure we get her favorites but it looks like that’s not going to be possible. MSM just says pick “on campus” or at unifieds and you don’t even specify the city and they are saying they’ll schedule you in December. Not sure how long that one takes but we are visiting them this fall so we can ask. We do have an “ideal plan” like you suggested - I’m sure it will take a beating but here’s hoping we can work things out like you did. We appreciate the info!
@ourturn2 I know Webster called my daughter to select a time slot. I remember it was on a Sunday morning - thought that was odd. And they were also the school we had to change times a bit and they were accommodating. (Meaning they still had availability so we could make the change-- that was in October or early November I believe). Good luck to you! It is an exciting year.
It will work out. Many schools only want about 15 minutes (plus dance call if they have that- and it may be at a different time). Others tell you to reserve half a or even a whole day.
For the couple we did back to back one morning we made sure to leave about 30-60 min in between in case the first one ran late. FYI - Webster was an hour behind the day we went. But they were trying to make sure kids were not missing any other appointments.
Thanks @vvnstar - that’s a good plan so we’ll do our best to stick with it. I think we have 6 schools we want to do at Chicago unifieds and one of those is a 15 minute one that we are having trouble finding out much about - anyone familiar with Miami?? Anyway, we might have 2 more if the prescreens come through but haven’t taped them yet so that will be a while if it happens. I have last year’s list of attending schools so later we can go through that and see if there are any others that might be good walk ins. Thanks for the Webster info @bfahopeful - it sounds like a program that has what my D is looking for so we’ll try to schedule that early in day if possible and maybe that will help with being on time?? Any other tips, please let me know!
I just saw this post - I’m actually a student in the BFA MT program at UMiami, and I auditioned at Chicago Unifieds, so if you still have any questions about the audition process, I can get you answers!
Webster was one of my daughter’s favorite auditions. last year. She did a walk in at NYC unifieds.
