Units for Admissions

@Melissa96 I know you answered this before? is a unit any class that is counted towards the recalculated UF GP for admissions? so any class honors or AP that is considered core is a unit? is a unit a full year or semester? anyone else can chime in to clarify?

A unit is a year long course. It takes 16 academic units to graduate from high school in Florida. 4 English & Math, 3 Natural Science, 3 Social Science, 2 Foreign Language.

@Melissa96 so is art a unit. But UF doesn’t count Art for example. How does UF calculate a unit. Is it just units in the core classes plus language , AP IB AICE DE ETC

Art would not until AP/IB/AICE. If you’d like to read more about what goes where, the information the state provides can be found online here https://dlss.flvc.org/documents/210036/217302/Florida+Counseling+for+Future+Education+Handbook.pdf/8e147e5f-857c-490e-be68-f145b084fc12 Units for SUS starts around page 55.

@Melissa96 I remember sitting at a session in front of UF admission people and they gave an example where they would take a kid with a little lower GPA but had more units than another student… in your eyes is there a good solid number of units that looks good? what number of units do you see as being very solid amount? and when you say those numbers are you including through Junior year or also including what will be senior year as well included in…

Well, UF recommends at least 20 academic units - what actually looks “good” depends on how many classes are offered at the school and how many other students at that school are taking.

@Melissa96 thank you very much… my daughter will have 29 units based on your description through the end of her senior year… she takes 7 classes a year (28 for 4 years), but I removed the only non UF Core class (Art)… plus she took a couple of Dual Enrollments over the summer giving her 29 by the time senior year is over… assuming that is good considering only 1 class wouldn’t count (Art)

@Melissa96 , may I ask a question of recalc GPA: if UF recalculates the GPA on English, Math, FL, SS, Science. Texas public school.

What if the student has 3 classes (each a year long) of independent study for English in addition to the required Eng 9th, 10th and 11th? The independent study is listed as
IND STUDY ENGL preAP 1, 2 and 3 Would those classes count in UF GPA? if so that would give D 6 English classes of which 5 would be H and 1 AP. Does that sound right to you? Thank you

@BingeWatcher If the class is a year long you double count it. If it’s like a pre AICE or honors UF counts it as a 4.5 for A and 3.5 for B etc. if it’s a college level class they count it as a 5 for A and 4 for B. If those Independent studies classes are English ( I have no clue) then yes they would count 5 honors and 1 College level, Assuming it’s an AP

@BingeWatcher - does the high school count it in with their English classes or elective classes?

We are in Texas.
The independent English courses do NOT fulfill the state of Texas’ English requirement. It is definitely electives NOT requirements.

@Melissa96 , my last question and thank very much, is what does AP Psych count as. D is taking it her jr year, as she has already taken AP human Geo and AP US history. Does it count as a social studies?

@BingeWatcher - got it then, we would not count the courses in English units. Psychology is a social science.
