Universities Studies at UCI

Hi. I am a first year at UCI and I'm considering whether to take Universities Studies: How A Race is Made.

Is this class really demanding and hard? I'm really afraid of the workload that it will require. I am also taking:
BioSci 93
BioSci 2A
Chem 1A
Writing 39B

Hopefully people who have already taken University Studies will answer this! Thanks! :)

The workload is okay. There’s a lot of reading. You’re encouraged to participate in both lecture and discussion. I can’t remember, but at least one of the professors counted participation in their grading. Occasionally you’ll have writing assignments, but they’re okay as long as you’re keeping up with the reading and they’re also usually short writing assignments-- maybe 2-3 pages long. The most stressful part of the class is your last quarter when you write your research paper. The paper was 50% of our grade. As long as you pass that paper/last quarter, everything is fine. And the University Studies Course will help you cover a lot of GEs. So, if you think you can handle a lot of reading, discussing, and writing, you should definitely take the University Studies course.

I’ve taken university studies my first year (Persuasion and Social change) and it was important to keep up. But I am glad I took it because it knocked out a bunch of GEs (which I hate taking) If you are worried about your courseload you could drop 39B and take university studies, you will just need to take 39B in the winter quarter.

The huge essay in spring isn’t that bad, if you weren’t taking university studies you would be taking 39C, which has just an equally massive essay to write.
