btw VCUARTS is certainly held in high regard as a design school ( and while Ross school is a terrific business school it should in no way be confused with a dedicated design school.) I would also add our D has many professional opportunities directly as a result of her performance at VCUARTS . These have been all over the nation and continue to come in as she is approaching graduation. Especially, been busy with
several top Media firms located in NYC . So I can attest to the strong , valid and well earned reputation in the industry. Good luck to you
@BCPAMOM - How is your son’s search going? Curious as to how this turns out for him. Btw, re-reading the thread, it may be helpful to look at post-graduate employment. For instance, @stones3 's D is way ahead of the curve in terms of accomplishments and opportunities at VCUArts. Might be a selling point for the school if she fares as well with employment after graduation. Believe @JBStillFlying can probably share some experiences on this. Hope all is going well.
Hi Brooklyn,
It’s going ok. We have not done a ton. He participated in a day long graphic arts recruiting event at Drexel which he loved. Just not sure about that campus- doesn’t really feel like there is one. We are doing a tour of Tyler School of Art at Temple University on 2/17/20. He is also planning on doing a summer overnight stay at RIT in July where he will get to take a couple art classes of his choosing along with a tour. Syracuse, VCUArts and Skidmore are on our list to visit. Also, I recently heard that PSU is going to start considering portfolio for admission in Fall 2020 so he will now apply there for sure (his older brother and father are grads).
If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.
Drexel is a city campus. The school is rising in recognition. Do you know if their COOP program applies to their BFA candidates? This can be very useful. Our son is at NEU and the COOP program is an amazing resource for testing the waters in real-job situations throughout undergrad. Tyler is also a city school, but Temple’s campus is much more expansive. You also get the best of both worlds – A dedicated art building at Tyler, combined with access to a large university campus and resources. RIT is Drexel in a rural setting…lol. Troy is kind of a rundown former industrial town (like a lot of Upstate NY towns). The campus has splashes of very contemporary architecture and facilities, but is largely a collection of cement buildings. Keep in mind at PSU that it is one of the few schools that requires an affirmative application to its honors program, Schreyer, should this be applicable. Can very much be about “feel” so let your son immerse in as many places as possible. Sounds as if you are doing a great job!
Hi Brooklyn- what does “an affirmative application to its honors program, Schreyer” mean? Are you saying he had to get in to Schreyer to major in art b/c that will never happen. Thanks for any information you can share.
My daughter is weighing the following options: Stamps at UMich, Parsons, Pratt, and SAIC (waitlisted at RISD), with merit $ at each (about $25K-$27K/year at those listed except Michigan, which awarded less). Wondering if you can share any factors that played a role in your daughter’s decision to attend Stamps?
Just a late in the chat question here-congrats! Did your merit aid include academic merit and portfolio? Was it need based at all? I’m looking for my Junior daughter/probably illustration major.
