I am a french student in an engineering school in Paris. I am not good at english that is why i would like to study abroad. The school offers the possibility to graduate from an US university with one year in the university.

My speciality is civil engineering and i don't know yet what i would like to study in US university, maybe geotechnical engineering.

I don't think i am good enough in english to get acces to MIT or Berkeley. And, i don't know what university is the best because i will graduate from this university and i am likely to stay in USA to work thanks to this master's degree.

What do you think of it ? Which Univ would you choose if you were me ?

Thank you in advance for your answers and i apologize for all the mistakes i might have done in this post.

Wooo… Don’t say that. You should always apply if you are really interested in it. However, don’t just apply because it’s famous. You might not like the environment there.
I think Berkeley’s admission is not as competitive as MIT, since it’s a public institution. But seriously, apply!

Well, try to work hard Even if you get into another “not-so-famous” college, you really want to have a good amount of vocabularies (like advance one), and good writing skill. Speaking can be improved when you get here.

Staying in USA to work is very difficult nowadays. Not only because the economy is bad, many companies are not willing to apply a visa for you, especially your prospect study is CE. I know quite a few international students here stayed in USA, but they are all computer science graduates.
However, you can always try.

Thank you very much Jwxie.
Actually, we have to take the GRE test (graduate record examination) and the TOEFL test. Each university has her own minimum scoring.
For exemple to get access to the MIT you have to get 100 (TOEFL Ibt) alike for berkeley and “only” 83 for UCLA.
That’s why i said that i think i am not good enough in english to get MIT or Berkeley.
Thank you again.
I will wait for others opinions.

You’ll have a good chance to get into all of them for MS if your grades are decent and your GRE Math is > 750 and Verbal is not too low (>450 or so).

Yeah, i know that. My grades are really good, i worked hard for it ! I am
training on the Mc Graw hill GRE 2010 Book and also on the Kaplan 2008 GRE
Cd-rom. But i found the Cd-rom much more complicated than the Book. With
the book, i succeed in having 14/30 of good answers at the Verbal and 25-26/28
of good answers at the math section. That makes 450-470 (Verbal) and 750 (Math).
But once i am on the cd-rom i succeed in doing 10/30 to the verbal and 23-24/28 to the math. It is a bit hard but i will carry on studying it.

So, is yet Texas A&M the best choice for civil engineering ?
Thank you for your involvment in this topic ! i leave to london right now, so i will not be able to respond to you for a week.
Thank again.

I just came back from the GRE. I only have my verbal score and quantitative score !

VERBAL : 440
QUANTITATIVE : 800

I have to wait 15 days until I get the analytical score result.

Do you know if it could be enought to get access to UCLA ? (I am not able to find their GRE score requirements on their website !)
What about Texas A&M and Northwestern ?

When my son applied to UCLA civil eng grad school, GRE scores were only required for grant applications, not for admissions. I think they care more about your undergrad engineering GPA than they do about GRE scores.

Texas A&M is likely the best choice in terms of ROI. Without looking up the tuition, I am guessing its tuition is lower than others. The cost of living in TX is a lot lower than LA/Bay Area/Evanston/Boston.

I went to Northwestern for ug and all I know about its civil engineering is that it’s ranked in the top-15 and that it has close collaboration with probably the best research center in transportation in the country. If it’s not too expensive and you want to get into transportation, it may be worth consideration.

Thanks a lot for all these answers ! I appreciate your implication !

What do you think about English Universities ? They are cheaper and
closer than American ones (from france I mean). Is it possible to get a job
without too much difficulties in the US with such a diploma ?
