So I'm really new to CC, and I know there is already a post on the UA thread about this, but I thought that if it was under this forum it would be seen by more people. If it is not proper to start this thread then I'll delete it, if that's possible. I auditioned for UA's BA MT in January, and we were told that we would be notified by the end of February of our status. I have yet to be notified, and I was wondering if anyone else has heard from the program. I'm just getting really impatient and nervous about the whole process, and was wondering what other people know. Thanks!

I didn’t apply there and don really know anything when it comes to that particular program, but I know that most schools send out acceptances slightly later than rejections. At least for a lot of the schools I auditioned for, I was told that I would be notified a lot sooner if i was rejected, but if they were still considering it would take longer. But every school does it differently, so it just depends! I would expect to hear something soon though.

My D auditioned there in January, and yes, they said that the kids would hear by the end of February, so thats either today or tomorrow. We have checked with a couple of others who also auditioned in January and they haven’t heard anything either.

We visited there last week. Sat in on a private vocal training class and met with Mr. Crystal. He also said they notify students at the end of February.

I do know they have rehearsals going on right now for an upcoming production, but I’m sure that is the case with probably every program.

I just received a phone call from Raphael Crystal. I have been accepted into the program and should be getting an email and snail mail letter soon.

Congratulations musicaliowan!!! Terrific news!!!

My D received a call from RC yesterday also. She was very excited to hear of her acceptance!

Congrats to both of you…

If you decide to attend UA for MT, PLEASE continue to post on this forum as Alabama doesn’t seem to get a lot of attention here for MT. (busy under the alphabetical subforum though…)

I would love to have your perspectives on the program as my D is planning to audition there next fall.

Many thanks and congrats again!!

Congratulations!! Also, don’t forget to post your acceptances in BOTH of these threads:

We LOVE celebrating successes with all the great CC kids (and their parents!)

mom2them, I will definitely keep posting on here if I end up going to UA. I’m still waiting on James Madison University, mainly because I only auditioned for these two! I know it was really risky, but I’m going to double major (need a BA) and auditioning for 10-12 schools seems insane and expensive. But then again what I did was sort of insane too.

But in regards to UA, I can tell you this (and how the audition day went)- I was very suprised when I auditioned. I came in not knowing exactly what to expect, but once introductions were over, a graduate student (not MT, but still very good) performed a song, followed by two senior MT students performing a duet from Italian Straw Hat. I was very impressed by the talent displayed on stage. I also learned that Raphael Crystal had been a part of starting Ball State’s MT Program, which, to my knowledge, is well known and regarded.

In terms of the audition day, it was long. We were divided into two groups for MT and sent off. My group hung around and did a few acting warm-ups. We then warmed up vocally and sang both of our audition songs for some of the faculty (2 at a table with a student, Mr. Crystal on piano) and they chose which song they would like us to sing with our monologue. And just so you know, DO NOT BE SCARED. Mr. Crystal was absolutely amazing at sight reading my audition pieces, one of which was I’m Calm from Forum (the other No More from Into the Woods). Some MT students then led us on a tour around campus. When we were done with that we presented our monologue and song to the faculty again. Afterwards we went to the dance call. If your D has any dance experience, or picks up quickly on choreography like me, she shouldn’t have that much of a problem. We danced to Ease on Down the Road from The Wiz, and more than anything they looked for potential. This whole process, registration to the end of dance call, was from about 11 am to 7 pm. They provided us with some things to eat and drink and we had a lot of down time. The atmosphere was friendly, and no one was secluded or cut throat.

The one thing that probably stuck the most with me was the dance instructor telling me that Alabama’s program may be a BA, but it is run like a BFA, which definitely comforted me. I still need to look into some aspects of the program, but overall it seems like a very legit program. And once again, I will continue to post if I end up going! This school really should be discussed more, it appears very under-rated!

Thanks for the thorough review. As I mentioned above, my D and I visited Alabama last week, went on a campus tour, met with honors dept folks, sat in on a private vocal lesson with Dr. Bill Martin, and met with Mr. Crystal.

We also spoke with several students in the hallway briefly and they were very positive and friendly. One student had three jobs waiting for her after graduation.

My D really liked the university as a whole.

Good luck in your final decision.

Hi I got accepted via phone call by Raph two nights ago but didn’t get the voicemail till last night. He called my moms phone instead of mine for some reason!
@musicaliowan I know this is an old thread so not sure if you are still on here, but which did you choose, JMU or UofA?? My D has JMU as her top choice but I know it is so competitive to get in, we will visit in the fall,.We also have UA on the list but probably wont visit until audition date. interested. Can you share your thoughts on the one you are attending? Thanks…
@joyfulmama - musicaliowan hasn’t posted since April of 2012, so I am guessing is no longer an active member of CC- sorry
Thank you @toowonderful.I now realize I can look up someones last activity. Too bad bc U of Alabama is not really mentioned on here but sounds like a good program and I would love info from someone in the know.
I have a friend who got her MFA in stage management there- she loved it
@Joyfulmama - musicaliowan is a rising senior at James Madison.
I have been fortunate to be on panels with, and to meet some of the faculty from Alabama at conferences. Great school, strong program, very generous scholarships from the university for students based on stats.
@KatMT Wow, thank you! is there a way for you to connect us? As you know JMU is my D’s top choice and I would love to hear from a current student. I want to keep U of A on the list but my D is thinking it is too far and too big. Since MT is so competitive I want her to have a good list of schools but she knows what she likes and the list is getting smaller rather than larger. We shall see…Anyway if musicaliowan wants they can pm me or you can give my email that you already have.
@joyfulmama – sure, I can shoot him and email. I think one of the women in his class was also deciding between the two. If they are able to answer questions, I can pm you their email addresses. They may be more comfortable communicating directly with your D.
If you search musicaliowan’s posts he also detailed things in the final decision thread.
My understanding is that there are similarities between the UALABAMA and JMU programs. Both professionally focused programs within the context of a comprehensive university. I think Bama is a bigger school that JMU, and Tuscaloosa a bigger town.
Perfect @KatMT ! Thanks again! When they pm meI will give them my D’s email to reach out to her. Looking forward to meeting you hopefully at the October open house, so we can also catch First Lady Suite! Agree the programs look similar which is why we were drawn to both, just the size and distance of U of A that might be an issue for my D.
