University of Alabama vs. University of Nebraska

Or visit. Not sure the OP would find either ISU more attractive than UNL.

In any case, UNL is still a fairly large flagship in a low-population state with few population centers nearby (and all those areas have flat or declining HS populations). They need to fill up somehow (plus they may want ethnic or other diversity).

Maybe that scholarship will become harder to get if the Huskers start contending for national titles again.

I have a friend who moved from MD to NE for a few years. His son attended UNL and loved it, and ended up staying in NE while his parents moved back to MD.

Nebraska sounds like a great school; the question is, is it affordable for the OP?

It certainly can be.

In any case, UNL takes in 7.5K kids a year but NE only graduates about 15K HS kids each year (and UNL has a minimum ACT requirement of 20). An ACT of 24 is still about 75th percentile. BTW, the MS flagships also give scholarships for that ACT score (though you need at least a 3.0 GPA), and MS State’s award for that ACT score is almost as high.

BTW, with those big scholarships, UAT is essentially giving away a free education (paid for by everyone else). So naturally, the scores needed to get them are higher. UNL does that too, but like many big schools in states that don’t generate enough HS grads with high-enough test scores, UNL also offers something close to the in-state rate to OOS students who are willing to pay a reduced price.

To get a “free education” from UA, an out-of-state student needs a minimum 32 ACT or 1400 (CR & M) SAT and a 3.5 GPA (http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out-of-state.html).

But back to the OP, it’s not clear to me she can afford Alabama OR Nebraska, even with that nice merit money from the latter. Has she clarified if the $20,000 her parents are offering is one-time or every year? BIG difference!

Nebraska and Illinois are in MSEP. UNL gives the $14,000/yr George Beadle scholarship that waives all of OOS tuition differential to qualified MSEP applicants. I think if her GPA had been 3.0+ she would have received that instead. It’s a bit difficult to determine as UNL does not appear on MSEP site, though they advertise the scholarship and refer applicants to MSEP site for info on requirements. Anyway UN-Omaha requires 3.0 for MSEP waivers.

Bama is not UAT
And everyone else is not paying for those scholarships… They are paid for by donors and football prophets

That is for University of Nebraska??? If so, that is pretty sad.

No, for all high school graduates nationwide.

A few thoughts:

  1. Huh, interesting. Evidently, calling 'Bama "UAT" is insulting to 'Bama partisans (even though it is UAT). Learn something new everyday.
  2. That's a lot of donors. I took a look: $127M in scholarships. $45M in gifts in 2013. The football program is profitable, but I don't believe profitable enough (after covering for the non-revenue sports) to make up the difference. In any case, I'll amend that to "paid for by certain other people).
  3. I took a look at ACT scores as well. Here are the 25-75 ranges (according to Niche): UNL: 22-29 'Bama: 22-30

The 75th percentile for all SAT takers was 580 (CR) and 600 (M) in 2014.

And, no, @PurpleTitan, it’s “UA.” Yes, it’s located in Tuscaloosa, but it’s not part of its name. Do you refer to Michigan as UMAA?

@LucieTheLakie, you know, I could. I’ll try out “UMAA” sometime and see what the reaction is.

According to the most recent UNL Fact Book:
http://irp.unl.edu/publications/fb14_15.pdf

about 9% UNL UGs from outside USA and almost 18% from states other than Nebraska. Listed by state and country of origin. They pick up quite a few from other MSEP states-400 from each of Illinois, Minnesota, South Dakota.

Hmmm. Just noticed South Dakota does not participate in MSEP and they aren’t on the UNL list of eligible states for that scholarship. But somehow they get quite a few South Dakota students anyhow.

By all means, @PurpleTitan. I’ll pop the popcorn!

For the record, I don’t take offense when people refer to Alabama as “UAT,” but it’s not the equivalent of “UNL.” Nebraska refers to itself as “UNL”; Bama refers to itself as “UA.”

It isn’t UAT…not an insult…just is wrong

Has OP disappeared?
Nice information about that OOS scholarship for ACT24.

To answer OP’s other question about the expensive cost of sororities, many national Greek organizations offer some financial aid based on need once joined. If you do not feel you are getting your money’s worth, you can disaffiliate. Typically, if members participate in core activities and events, the fee offers value. Also, while at Bama, I felt my fee was worth every penny for the immediate friendships and the “home” base my house offered…especially useful for OOS students.
