University of Buffalo School of Law

Just accepted to Buffalo Law. Need opinions based upon experiences attending if this is a good school and how post graduation employment opportunities existed for you.

Law School Transparency has all the numbers you need about grad job prospects. For example, bar pass rate of 72%. Employment score of 68%, which is the number of grads in FT jobs requiring a JD 9 months after graduation. 19% unemployed. 8% of grads in Big Law (paying the big bucks)… 8% in businesss. The rest in small law firms.

It depends on your longterm goals. I went to UB Law back in the old days and, though it has made strides in placing students in Biglaw through semester-long internship and mentoring programs in NYC, it is still places primarily in upstate NY law firms. If you want to work in Buffalo or Rochester or even Syracuse, it makes sense to take advantage of the state school tuition. If, however, you are looking for traditional Biglaw, know that only the tippy top of the class even has the opportunity to compete for those jobs. As @bluebayou notes, look at the data on Law School Transparency and think hard about where you’d like to practice after graduation.

Full disclosure – I graduated 10th in the Class in 1981 and did get a job in NYC Biglaw. However, I am still in touch with people active in the law school and am told that it is evolving with the times, finding niche areas in which to offer clinics, and focusing on experiential education for its students. The new dean happens to be the daughter of one of my adjunct professors who used to commute to Buffalo from NYC to teach Criminal Procedure.
