I'm trying to decide between UChicago and Amherst and I want to major in English. Is there any real difference between the English programs at the schools (reputation/quality)?

My UChicago interviewer was an English major, and she was telling me about some amazing literature courses she took when I mentioned that I loved Latin American literature. One was called Literature of Three Americas. She seemed really passionate about it. I don’t know how it compares to Amherst, but she made the English program at UChicago sound awesome.

It was down to these two for me (applying as a transfer student) and I chose Chicago.

Chicago has smart people, a LIBRARY, and the city of Chicago, whereas Amherst has popped collars (literally!) and old money, a library (with a small L), and Amherst, MA. Once I visited the choice was fairly clear.

for english i would probably choose amherst.

radically different environments. reasearch, visit, decide.

UChicago is great, but for English, I too would definitely go for Amherst. It’s a lot more than popped collars, people! Plus, you have the resources of Hampshire, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, and UMass–AND all of their libraries. Plus, there is something incredible about the nurturing LAC education.
