Hello,
I previously posted on this forum to request information regarding schools in London for my daughter and recieved some really good information. She is now looking at a school called the University of Exeter. Does anyone have any comments on this school?

She wants to study English /Creative Writing. Her stats as follows:
SAT 2190
ACT 32
Honors track at her school
GPA 3.9 out of 4.0
AP US Hist 4
AP English 5
Will take all AP courses in Senior Year.

I would also like to hear from parents who have sent their children overseas and how they dealt with finances and details like health insurance. I know I might need to post another topic but just to get some general feedback.
Thank you in advance.

I know very little about University of Exeter but the city of Exeter itself and the surrounding county of Devon is beautiful. It is where English people go on their holidays. Rural and somewhat wild (with adorable wild ponies. I so want one!)

Note that this is the polar opposite to London (and nearly 200 miles away). A small place of about 100,000, compared to 7 million. If London life is what you are looking for, this is not it. It will take at least 2.5-3 hours to get to London from Exeter (by train. Driving more like 5+). That’s not an evening out trip. Devon is more farming and surfing country, rather than the big city lights.

Any student staying 6 months or more gets free health care from the government. You don’t have to do anything for this. It is automatic (in fact, even if you arrange private healthcare -which is very unusual in the UK and will no doubt be with an NHS doctor who does private work in his evenings off- the university will probably register all it’s students with an NHS doctor anyway in the first week. This is what happened to me. I got a piece of paper saying here is the address of your local doctor). What you need is travel insurance. The sort that will pay for emergency repatriation to the US should the student suffer and injury that makes it necessary to go home.

I’m British, although I’m living in the U.S. at the moment. The University of Exeter is a great university, but I’m not sure that it’s the best place for her degree subject. There are other places that are known for their writing, communication depts etc. It’s best to look at the University league tables by subject - you can do this by looking at the University sections in papers online such as The Guardian and The Times. Exeter is in a beautiful part of the country, really beautiful and is close to Bristol where there is quite a large airport with flights all over Europe. London is reached in under 2 hours by the fast train connection from Exeter station. Don’t forget that the UK has an incredibly fast, comfortable and extensive train network that will get you all over the UK and now easily into Europe.
