UF made $50 a piece from them.
UT is an amazing school with nationwide clout that has been very high in the rankings for a long time. They are one of the top schools to send kids to FAANG companies out west for example. It is also highly highly competitive - both in state and out of state. OOS acceptance rate is 8 percent. If you are not auto admitted in state in Texas (top 6 percent of your class), it is very very difficult.
I don’t get the school wide rankings either - it makes more sense to me to look at the particular major.
Thx!
Not a lot
I highly disagree about the second class status of pace. I know plenty of students in the class of ‘23 and ‘24 who are part of Pace and they are doing quite well. You make the most of your situation. If you want to be a Gator and that is how you were admitted than you accept. When you get to campus you introduce your self to your professors, let them know you are serious and I bet at least some will give you the chance to prove yourself. Just like anything else in life the more you put in, the more you get out.
Also remember once you finish 60 credits you are no longer a Pace student. So I encourage you to take additional summer courses. Sign up for a two express term dual enrollment classes now. There are many ways to become an on campus student sooner than you think.
We applied once we got in. It’s a $25 gamble. FSU is $50. Other schools have the same. We just add it to the “application” costs. These are the only 3 and we applied to 21. The rest you have to commit first.
I imagine anyone who wants on campus housing can get it. It just may not be the best.
@VirginiaBelle I think you can pay the $25 tomorrow. I would call housing first thing. Wish I told you earlier!
Careful with the Standard. The construction isn’t the best and the apartments are expensive for the size, but it is a very social place. They are owned by Landmark, a company that has college apartments all over the US.
Is there any part of UF that would make it a better option than Georgia Tech? I am OOS at both schools, but received a good scholarship from GT (Stamps Finalist). I doubt I would receive the same from UF, but in terms of the engineering and CS programs UF seems to be making efforts but I am unsure of how they compare in industry to GT. I applied for Computer Engineering at both schools (would like to minor in CS if possible).
I may not go to University of Florida simply because how annoying it was to pick a password for Gator Link
Ok, not really.
But, seriously, the worst ever.
GT is similar to MIT cmu stanford berkeley
for engineering. they have a lot of clout. the same can’t quite be said for UF, though it is still a very strong program.
Yes - we have paid already at UGA. Looks like we can pay online once he sets up his account - got an email today.
His other acceptances don’t require an early payment to secure housing priority and it didn’t occur to me to pay before he was accepted. Now we know!
If you get Stamps, go to GT. Number 1 in the country for Civil and Industrial Engineering, #2 for Chemical, Biomedical, Aerospace, Mechanical, #5 for CS and Computer Engineering. Much higher return on investment than UF for these disciplines as well.
A GT degree opens a lot of doors. With Stamps your ROI would be even higher. Georgia Tech Ranked Second For Public University ROI | News Center
Just go on line and pay. no need to call.
Yes - very familiar Same concerns all over I think.
Assuming $$ are the same and you are ok being in a very urban environment, you can’t beat G Tech for engineering. I’m not a ranking fan…you’ll do well at both and I’d be more concerned about campus type you want as they are different - but in perception, GT is pretty much tops in the country (or near it).
Having an OOS student at UT, totally agree with this assessment. If you attend there in one of the highly regarded majors, you are basically guaranteed a job/internship as the programs are just that good and people are blown away by them. My daughter has encountered this during her interviews for internships when they ask what she has been doing in her classes, etc. Their handling of Covid aside, it has been a phenomenal experience.
Just did it! Thanks all!
You have two great choices. I am biased to Texas, went there out of state many years ago and loved it. There is definitely a value to going to a school in another part of the country from where you grew up. Of course, depending where you are in Texas, Austin can feel like a different country.
Both schools are very similar in that they are huge state flagships, with Texas being a little bigger. You can find a great education at either school, but you will have to work to find your way and navigate the bureaucracies that come with big state schools, difficulty getting registered for classes, etc. than you would at smaller places. If you know in what field you want to major, that should be a big factor. Both places will have various programs that are better than the other one. I know Texas has a great computer science program, business is good, and of course, if you want to go into the energy field, Texas is probably your best bet. The film school is top notch as well, when I was there, Matthew McConaughey and Richard Rodriguez, were RTF majors, Richard Linklater was getting started with Slacker, and Owen Wilson, Wes Anderson, and Renee Zellwegger were figuring out what they wanted to do as English majors. Florida has strong engineering, accounting, and pharmacy programs, as well as citrus science and other agricultural programs. I think the journalism program is pretty strong too. As @CrazyDad9 says, they are also great for pre-med with a world class teaching hospital on campus.
The biggest difference may be the size of the cities. Austin is probably about 10 times as big now as Gainesville. Austin is a state capitol and has a thriving tech industry that brings in a lot of new blood. Gainesville is not a small town by any means, but it is very much centered around the university above all else.
Definitely visit both if you can. Sometimes what looks good on paper doesn’t match up when actually get there, and sometimes your expectations are exceeded. Congratulations and good luck with your decision, you really can’t go wrong.
If he is a Stamps finalist and gets the Stamps scholarship he will have a full ride to Georgia Tech. As a Finalist he will likely be awarded another of the high dollar scholarships if he does not get Stamps. It would be very hard to turn down - well paying internships and co ops are plentiful for those sophomore and up (harder to get summer after freshman year). I am biased though because I have a child there who is super happy - it is a great place.
