Which of these schools would be better for computer science? And which of these is better for jobs, campus life, etc? Thanks.

I can’t speak to the particular major, but Tech would get the edge, in my opinion, for campus life and reputation. It is really an unsung gem in Texas. The honors program is strong and provides a lot of individual attention. Lubbock has a lot to offer, but IS west Texas, which isn’t for everyone.

texas tech, because its Texas TECH, that tech part means its more geared towards technology hahaha

Like MomofWildChild said, Tech would probably edge out in general reputation. However, both schools are the ones that recently qualified for state funding to pursue “Tier 1” status. I really can’t tell you anything about computer science, but UH has some very good departments. I would think Computer Science would be strong just because of the NASA and oil links. You should take a careful look at the departments in each school and compare them. Also, where you want to work afterwards could be a deciding factor. If you want to be in Houston, UH has an advantage. And Tech is in West Texas. You are going to have very different student populations and general cultural experiences. Houston has a real Chinatown with street and store signs in Chinese. They have several local foreign consultants, in many ways a very international city. From my time in the panhandle, I found people to be probably the most friendly in Texas and from what I’ve seen of the Tech Honors program, it looks very good. But it is going to be a very different atmosphere than Houston.

Tech and U of H are vastly different in their feel and orientation, a huge urban state university grounded in the state’s largest city versus a huge sprawling state university that is the toast of West Texas. My son graduated from Tech’s Business School a few years ago and loved it (attending the Honors College). Tech has s strong alumni network, especially in the Dalls-Fort Worth area, who hire Tech grads. My son works for a Fortune 250 Houston based oil field services firm that recruits at Tech. (He recruited engineering graduates for his firm at Tech a couple weeks ago.) So visit the comp sci departments at both U of H and Tech and make up your mind. One or the other will grow on you.

Texas tech has an edge.
The reason being its a very good tech school so has loads of STEM alumni connections also the Engineering school is one of the best in the university.
