Is the University of Iowa better than Iowa State for math/premed, or vice versa? ISU, I know, is great for computer science and engineering. Do those programs often correlate with great math programs?

Also, how are internships/volunteering with hospitals field with either college? How about tutoring opportunities? Undergrad research? Would I be able to easily find work in all these fields to help with prospects in either medical school or grad school in mathematics?

You may want to look at faculty rosters and course offerings to see which has courses and research closer to your math interests. You may also want to check the math department and career center at each school to see if there is any information on placement rates into PhD programs and employment (and which PhD programs and employers) for math majors at each school.

University of Iowa is too expensive for out of state students.

Iowa State is cheaper and better for STEM fields.

What state are you in?

*I am a junior in high school, and I would like to get into the mathematics program at Northwestern.

ACT composite: 32
ACT english: 35
ACT math: 33
ACT reading: 33
ACT science: 26 (This is a cause of worry for me. Will Northwestern take this into strong consideration, since I’m applying for their math program?)

Cumulative GPA: 3.88 (More recently, I’ve been getting a 4.0)

Class Rank: 12/56 (I’m also worried about this. Are applicants of small class sizes treated more leniently when it comes to class rank?)

My extracurriculars are cross country, golf, concert band, and jazz band. I also do some volunteer work at the hospital.*

how much will your parents pay each year? If you’re OOS for Iowa schools, then they could be very expensive unless you’re given some merit scholarship money.

Are you just considering med school or are your rather certain?

Actually, Iowa State is not that expensive at out-of-state list price compared to many out-of-state public schools (and even some in-state public schools).

It’s not a question as to out-of-state tuition. I live in Iowa. Thanks for all the advice, though!
