University of Kentucky Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

Do they do all the Singletary interviews first and then Presidential comes after they see the results of the Singletary awards?

Counting the spots for sign-up was about 150 but who knows. Interesting that the interview dates were so soon, seems like some quick travel if an OOS wanted to do it in person. They award 25. Someone said somewhere in a past year that the in state number was about 85% of the 25.

Has anyone heard about the Presidential Scholarship?

I was wondering the same and Lewis Honors. Has anyone been accepted to the Honors program?

that I do not know but would be logical. But for Ky kids who did the Governor’s Scholar Program, their scholarship is the same as presidential so I don’t know how that factors in. GSP kids do try for Singletary.

My DD got an email today saying that decisions will be released on Friday, Feb 25.

REJECTED!! 34 ACT, 3rd in my class, FBLA state president and other decent extracurriculars and leadership
very interesting lol but I already have a full-ride elsewhere and acceptances at colleges ranked a lot higher so totally fine, almost withdrew my app a few days ago anyways. Very random process, congrats though to everyone who was admitted!

I understand your frustration, but you’re right, it is a somewhat random process that is not like many other honors colleges. The college itself is not like many honors colleges. I wish you and others knew this at the beginning.

You’ll do great things, even if you end up at UK as a non-honors student. Congrats on all of your options!

Same here, daughter didn’t get in. 34 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA and 4.4 W GPA. Varsity sports (two different sports with state appearances all four years), full-time employment last two summers, many extracurriculars and in top 5% of class of competitive school with class of 500. Congrats to those that got in!

Yeah, I heard they focus on essays a lot more than others. I wrote mine very quickly and one of mine was probably pretty controversial to the AO, so I think it likely left a sour taste in their mouth. I only applied to have a shot at their full tuition scholarships in case one of my other options fell through
so after not getting a Singletary invite (or whatever it’s called) I didn’t really care haha but figured I’d leave my app just to see if I get into honors because I had already done all the work.

Yes, the focus on the essays seems ridiculous and naive to me. Not only can essays be easily faked, the reading of them is completely subject to the evaluator’s bias. Plus, the focus on writing marginalizes students that excel in non-writing areas.

I can understand not placing a lot of emphasis on standardized tests because some students just aren’t going to have the same preparation opportunities as others, but everything else that can’t be faked seems like it is meaningless.

@OhiBro Can you explain what makes UK’s honors college different from others? My D22 just got into the honors college. We are OOS and haven’t visited yet, so any info is great.

@trops Congrats on the acceptance!

The people at the college are great. For the first few years, the college was led by the former dean of the highly regarded Penn State program. He was recently promoted to another position within the university, but the college is off to a great start.

The college is relatively new and still developing. You do get the priority registration and special advising that other colleges offer. There are some honors-specific classes, but there isn’t really an extensive list of classes that have honors sections like some colleges have.

The college is geared toward liberal arts and not STEM, which may explain the focus on an applicant’s essay. Also, I think they make an effort to admit students from across KY, which means taking kids with a good story that may not have the highest stats, sometimes taking the spot of a high-stats kid. Some colleges value stats much more.

That makes a lot of sense. I’m OOS and I thought it was more on stats when I submitted my essays. My stats aren’t like super AMAZING but I have been accepted to Notre Dame and some other somewhat selective schools with 20-25ish acceptances and have another option with a full-ride scholarship. So my stats aren’t horrendous I would say, but maybe I’m disillusioned. I did hear about the importance of the essay and how it’s accounted for more, but that was after I submitted my app. All good though, I’m not going here anyways.

My daughter was Valedictorian, won tons of awards, etc, etc and was not accepted into Lewis Honors. She is currently a UK freshman. One attraction to Lewis was their dean, Christian Brady, who ironically is currently the interim Dean of Arts & Sciences, her college. While not getting into Lewis was disappointing, there are some Pros of NOT being accepted.

  1. With Merit Weekend and all of her AP credit, she was able to register early anyway and get all of the classes she wanted.
  2. She joined STEMCats LLP which allowed for early move in.
  3. She was recognized as 1 of 20 Lunsford Scholars. These Scholars are paid around $5K for research, internship, study abroad. With Lewis you have to pay additional money to participate in the program.
NOTE: She earned a 4.0 Fall Semester, made the Dean’s List and wouldn’t want to be anywhere besides UK. Things all work out for a reason.

Your daughter sounds awesome! Thanks for relaying your experience.

Has anybody heard on Otis or Presidential?

Just got an email:

"Dear NAME,

Exceptional students are the lifeblood of the University of Kentucky Lewis Honors College. You are an exceptional student and we want you to join our thriving community at the University of Kentucky.

We are very excited that we are now able to admit you into the Lewis Honors College this fall!

With so many incredible students interested in learning and living on the UK campus, we’ve made the decision to slightly expand the size of the Lewis Honors College. We want you to be part of it!"

This is kind of funny LOL, did they not think of “slightly” expanding it before sending out decisions 6 days ago? Very honored I guess that I was considered, but I won’t be attending.
