Hello there! I auditioned at UMiami as a walk-in in Chicago and was admitted. I was wondering if anyone had any information on how prestigious the program is and how good/bad their reputation is? Thank you so much for any help! It is much appreciated! :)

The University of Miami and Frost School of Music has a very strong program. Go to the forum listings at the top of this page and you will find lots and lots of info!

My son almost went to UM for classical guitar but chose NYU acting. Living in Fl- he wanted a change of climate. When he auditioned at the end of Jan- it was 87 degrees. Anyway, the campus looks like a resort. The Frost School of Music is beautiful and one of the best. Their theatre is the Jerry Herman Theatre. It’s not a huge campus so it’s easy to get around. Their MT program has a strong reputation and people come from all over the world to attend. Also, a lot of guest artists visit because Miami is a good venue.

I have to be honest, I don’t really know how prestigious it is nor what their “reputation” is like, (not really sure what you mean by that, anyway) but I do know that you should probably be more concerned with whether their educational philosophy and teaching style is a good fit for you, as well as whether you would be happy with the location and the culture of the school itself.

Just because a school has a great reputation does NOT mean it’s the “best” school for you. So many students get so caught up in getting into what they think the world perceives as the “top” schools instead of figuring out what schools will suit their learning styles best.

I know U of Miami is a fine school. It’s not shady. It’s well-known. That should really be enough to qualify it as a reasonable option. The rest of the decision should be based on whether it’s the right program for YOU!

You need to go visit the campus. We went last year to see it with my D. She hated it. hated the humidity and the theatre is eh! Frost is a great school of music but that is not MT. The person who gave us a tour of the theatre said there is no plan to build a new theatre in the works. It really is all about the fit.

The MT program is no longer part of the Frost Music school (I think Frost used to offer a BM in MT). MT is now a BFA and it is now part of the college of Arts & Sciences. There is also a BA in degree (I think it is not specific to musical theatre but I could be wrong.) You can get a rather detailed course listing on Miami’s website which lays out the curriculum year by year. Their website could use some updating and the info isn’t all that easy to find but it is there if you dig. I do know two extremely talented girls that are there now (one is a sophmore the other a junior). If I get any info from them I’ll share it.

Thank you guys so much for your responses! Everything is of major help.

Sorry if I’m a little vague or seem like all I care about is their reputation because it’s not. All this college stuff is just extremely stressful and I really want to make the right decision. But thank you for all of your help so far! :)

I was also accepted to the school. The head of the program is new. I hear he is stern and sometimes frustrating to work with, but definitely good at getting the best out of you.
Where else are you looking/considering attending?

My son was accepted to mt. We would LOVE some feedback from current students. Anyone?

My son was also accepted to UM’s MT BFA… He is thrilled and loved his audition experience with them in NYC. He too was a walk-in. Academically UM is top notch. My daughter has a friend that graduated UM MT program and has been very successful since graduating. Hopefully he will contact my son to answer questions… if so, I will share insight.
Congratulations and good luck!

I rarely de-lurk, but I have been working my way through the awesome list of schools here, and have gone over thousands and thousands of posts here – the most incredibly helpful resource I have found on the internet!

…Going through the Miami MT website today, I am appalled at the typos. Misspellings galore (including even misspellings of guest artists’ names!), words run together, bad or missing punctuation – Honestly, if my high school sophomore turned in a paper that looked like this website, she’d get a failing grade.

I am loath to spend any time even considering a program that can’t be bothered to proofread its own material – and I certainly wouldn’t want to hand over tens of thousands of dollars to an organization that appears so sloppy. (The online catalog also contains proofing errors, though not as many. And the design of the website is also a mess.)

I realize I’m possibly being petty here, and please feel free to tell me so. But Miami just got crossed off our list.

Although U Miami’s website is agreeably dated, unsophisticated and hard to navigate (very true… quite possibly the worst we encountered), the MT program is a very good one and the school overall is excellent. If you like the idea of an intimate program with plenty of on stage opportunities and very good training all while housed within a university with an excellent academic reputation… and oh by the way, the campus is beautiful, I’d not let the website typos stop you from having a closer look. There will be plenty of reasons to rule out or in various programs, this one would not be the hill that I’d die on at least in THIS school’s particular case.
