I’m filling out the Common App, and the University of Michigan supplement gives the following choices for “U-M College or School to which you are applying”
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA)
Residential College (LSA)
College of Engineering
School of Music, Theatre & Dance Dual applicant
School of Kinesiology
School of Nursing
Stamps School of Art & Design
From what I understand, the Residential College is a program within the College of LSA, and the latter (atop the list) is the real “college.” I just want to triple-check this before filling anything in. Can anyone confirm that the College of LSA is the main undergraduate program.
Put another way, I’m interested in political science and/or urban planning. The Ford School is a graduate program, and the Taubman College isn’t listed here either. Should I choose “College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA)” as my response to this question?
Yes choose Literature, Science and the Arts. I am a graduate from LS & A, so i know. Residential College is like a live and learning community, a school within a school, where students dorm together at East Quad on central campus and take a few classes together at the dorm. It makes a large university smaller. I know of freshman applicants who applied to Residential College because they did not want to take a chance and get stuck being assigned to the Bursley dorm on North campus, where you would have to take a bus everyday to get to classes and everything else on central campus. P.S. With regards to your user/name NotVerySmart—if you are not very smart be aware that admissions to Michigan is unlikely. This year Michigan accepted only about 26% of freshman applicants. Quite a difference from the 64% acceptance rate when i applied from OOS a little over 30 years ago!!
@trackmbe3 -Ok, thanks. That cleared things up-choosing “College…” brought up a series of questions that eventually let me select political science as an intended major.
I like to think I have a chance of getting in at Michigan, and our school’s admissions counselor agrees, but I’ll find out for sure come December.
Just a reminder that the admission rate has been dropping a lot in the recent years, even more so for students from OOS. Many GC are not aware of this. A few years ago, it was still over 40% and now it is 26% (around or below 20% for OOS). Anyway, your stat looks good and it should be a high match for you.
