Surprise to know you were deferred at Illinois too, but this only gives the ideal that the school is not driven by numbers. Statistically, over half of the deferrels at UIUC are eventually admitted, so I would definately keep it on the list. Are you a resident of Illinois, if so UIUC would be much more affordable. As for engineering, Illinois does lead but University of Michigan is also great in that field. Also, according to USNEWS they are par with each other ( speakingo f undergraduate ranking overall). So with all that said, you have plently of time to self think on which university is best for you ( considering if your eventually admitted into UIUC), you do not have to make a drastic decision now.
Oh yeah I’am also familier with Purdue, and the engineering program is also great. Overall the school in general is not exactly on the same league as UIUC and UMich.

^^^The OP is an INTERNATIONAL student. That means he/she is NOT a resident of any state in this country. UIUC, as well as Purdue, is also NOT in the same league OVERALL academically as Michigan. Sharjeel92 I would advise you to go to Michigan over the other schools, all things equal. While I love visiting Toronto, and I am not very familiar with the Kitchener/Waterloo area, you just can’t choose a better atmosphere in which to live for four years out of your choices than in Ann Arbor. It’s a wonderful community.

Thanks a lot for all you advice .

I am planing to visit all the universities in January and hopefully I choose the best university for myself. I am leaning to wards Michigan now as I have read a a lot of good things about it on the internet.

I had a question regarding Michigan . I read that Detroit is not even close to safe … But then Detroit is where all the major companies are located … SO if I want to get an Internship will I have to go to Detroit or are there automobile related companies with in the Ann arbor area ? . Also , How is the campus … Is it safe ?.

Again … I have been accepted for the Mechanical engineering course … but does that make me eligible to get a minor degree from Michigan ? … Is it possible for me to do that with four years and will it cost more ?

Thanks – Sharjeel92

Visiting is probably the best advice I could give you…make your assessment and your decision at what you find or don’t find on these campuses…that said, I think your choice is between Toronto and Michigan…Waterloo is a great school but the town is a bore.

Thanks a lot guys. I am open to more suggestions … so keep hitting me with facts :)

*1)Chicks - I don’t want ugly nerds with the braces on. I want them hot and ready like buffalo wings *

LOL…you get an A for admitting that you want tasty eye candy.

How are the girls in Michigan? Are they pretty? What does College Prow!er say? They “grade” the looks of males and females on various campuses. I have a two-year old copy, so I’ll look.

LOL … I just speak my mind …

Thanks a lot for responding . It is really kind and generous of you to help us (students … aspiring billionaires and even parents) out. Thank you for all the help.

The girls are rated an A- (don’t know what that means in relation to other schools whose girls are rated A or A+)

I would not base your decision to attend Michigan on reports that Detroit is unsafe. These reports are grossly exaggerated. There are areas in every large American city that are less safe than others. It is highly unlikely that engineering internships will be in these areas. Engineering jobs in southeastern Michigan are spread out over a large area. In addition, Michigan School of Engineering will offer opportunities outside of Michigan as well.

Ann Arbor is very safe. To be honest, I would be concerned about my safety if I attended Georgia Tech.

Thanks a lot people. Also , Do I have to take an appointment or call up before I visit Michigan ? . Also what about the tours ?.

I hope to see you people there :)

If you are going to visit Michigan, you will want to go on the website and sign up for the visit which will include the tour. There is a separate program for students who already have been admitted. It’s called Campus Day. [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: Campus Day: Registration](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/campusday/registration.php#dates)

No, you posted “too soon.” Otherwise, you wouldn’t have needed to edit your post after the fact (of seeing mine).

You were desperately trying to beat me to the punch…

I have beeen accepted to both. Can any1 help me which 1 will be better for me ( I am an International Student)

Start a new thread for the above comparison nafis9.

I believe Illinois is better than Michigan at engineering, but I also believe that skipping out on everything else Michigan has to offer just to attend a slightly-better program isn’t worth risking your happiness in the long run.

Michigan, regardless of WHERE you want to work in the world. DEfinitely not Canada. I’m sorry but the standard of engineering education is just not the same. If you dont believe me read up on the modules you will study in each of these universities and consider their level of rigour. FYI, as an international asian (and we’re big on “names” “prestige” “opportunities” etc), UIUC is often our engineering buffer school of choice. Really if you got into U of M, take it and you will not regret I promise. UIUC’s location also leaves much to be desired.

^^ You might want to look at some rankings which list Toronto as top ten in Engineering in the world. And there are other top schools in Engineering in Toronto just as competitive as any in the world. So you want to re-evaluate your definitely not Canada statement, unless you really know what you are talking about.
