University Of Michigan - Ann Arbor Vs Purdue Vs University Of Toronto Vs Waterloo

I am an International student. I just got admitted to University of Michigan and I am psyched.

Here is my list with decisions :-
UIllinoi - Deferred , Major - Mechanical Engineering
UMichigan - Accepted , Major - Mechanical Engineering
Purude - Accepted , Major - Undecided Engineering
UofT and Waterloo - I am in as my stats are above requirements for Indian students and that of people who have been accepted . I am wondering whether I should apply to these universities.

My criteria :-

1)Money - I have it covered . My parents want to send me to the best possible university.

2)Major - I am planning to do a minor with my major or a double major, But I do not know which of the universities would allow that . Mostly an engineering degree ( Mechanical engineering) with a possible - International relations or Economics or....

3)Jobs - I want the university to have the best job placements .

4)Quality of education - The best among the 5 mentioned above.

5)Campus size and weather - Size doesn't matter (that is why I applied to public universities). I currently in Dubai and I lived 4 years in Canada. So temperature ranging between -40 Degree Celsius and 50 Degree Celsius is manageable.

Criteria which is not so Important :-

1)Chicks - I don't want ugly nerds with the braces on. I want them hot and ready like buffalo wings :P (Ignore the lameness .. Basically a Very Co-ed environment) .. But can be compromised if the education is great.

2)Good Facilities - Top class equipment .. Good sports .. Good Transport .. Nice City/State .. and Good Dorm rooms .. Good parties and Finally Safe.

Help me out : )

BUMP  …

Any suggestions ?

If you plan to work in Canada: Toronto.

If you plan to work in the USA: Michigan.

^ I pretty much agree with that, provided that money is really no object.

Waterloo is much stronger than Toronto in engineering and computer science. It also has a fantastic co-op program.

Toronto has the larger international name and is in the more interesting city.

Yes, but the OP says:

and…

and…

and finally…

^
You apparently neglected to read my second sentence. I addressed those points.

^ Not directly.

Thanks for the advice people . But can anyone of of you tell me Whether I can do a major and a minor in the university and will it cost more ? . .

P.S. - You can completely ignore my criteria and Tell me which school I should go to and why rather than just putting out the name. AGAIN , Thanks for the help.

Please provide your evidence.

Also , I have not yet decided where I want to work so all the universities are together and I am not sure where I might end up living .

SO all together the Canadian and US universities … where should i go for the Mechanical engineering course with my main criteria followed by the rest  ? ? and WHy ?

noimagination,

IBclass06’s word is sufficient evidence, didn’t you know that? ;)

Both Michigan and Purdue have top ten mechanical engineering departments in the US.

[Mechanical - Best Engineering Schools - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-engineering-schools/mechanical-engineering)

I am going to do my Undergraduate degree .

^ I know, but there exists a positive correlation between undergraduate and graduate departments.

Same professors, same grad students…

If you’re going to cite rankings,

a) Include Illinois, which is also top 10 and on the OP’s list. Although deferred, it’s not out of the running.

b) Use the undergrad ranking.

[Undergraduate Engineering Specialties: Mechanical - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/spec-doct-mechanical)

Indeed it should be, because unlike the majority of posters, I almost always check my facts before posting.

As far as evidence, well, Waterloo says it best:

Waterloo’s undergraduate engineering program is Canada’s largest and best.

[Faculty of Engineering | University of Waterloo](http://www.engineering.uwaterloo.ca/aboutEng.html)

I admit that “much stronger” is hyperbole. In terms of facilities and research output, Toronto is certainly on par.

The OP was deferred from Illinois.

Did you read the thread title???

I noticed. You posted too soon, or you would have seen that I addressed that when I edited my post.

I see no reason why Illinois shouldn’t be included, considering the OP has yet to be accepted to either Toronto or Waterloo. They are much more stats-based, to be sure, but quirks happen.

EDIT: I completely agree with rjk’s post below. Michigan is the logical American choice and quite probably the best overall.

UIUC=Michigan in engineering. Pretty much a wash, with Illinois only slightly higher.

U-M > Illinois, Overall academically

Ann Arbor>>UC. This is not even a close call.

Thanks a lot for the advice people. SO how would you rank all the Universities I mentioned for my course.

Also … I still don’t know why I got rejected from Illinoi even though it has a higher acceptance rate than Michigan (where I have been accepted). I am also waiting to hear from Georgia Tech (where I have applied).

Thanks again
