University of Michigan Deferral Supplement

UMich is requesting a followup continued interest supplement for students who were deferred. The supplement is as follows:

“In 250 words or less, describe how your personal educational goals connect to the University of Michigan’s mission and values.”

Unlike most of the school websites I have looked at, I have not been able to find lots of information on their “mission and values.” I did find a quote from the president, but it was pretty basic and sort of just described education in general.

I am predominantly looking for evidence of their values. I would prefer to write about how they show their values rather than what they say, so if you know of any programs or features of their education that is unique to UMich, I would like to write about that.

Also, would it be appropriate to write predominantly about the college within UMich (ie college of literature, science, and arts) or do I have to talk about the university as a whole?

You should combine it between the two. Obviously they want you to write about the University, but their college of LSA is one of the things that attracts you to it. You can center your essay around the LSA but add in details of the university as a whole.

Look at their Moto near the bottom. Now reread their mission statement

Add in the line from their fight song “Leaders and Best” and now you should know what Michigan Stands for.

So in my son’s essay not Loci since he was accepted 3 years ago… He spoke about what types of students he wanted to be around. Ones that were as intellectually curious as he was. Ones that would challenge his way of thinking. Striving to be his best (, best) He talked about being part of the campus community by starting a club (which he did) (Leadership)… Etc

Thank you
