^^^^LOLOL. Love that. Yeah, I am probably either a sloth or a house cat.
So when my inhibitions are gone I guess I’m a hibernating bear.
We’re heading out shortly (to go skiing this weekend) I’m sure it will be a major topic of conversation. We’re hearing the damages are reaching $75,000 but there were two resorts that had damages so not sure what the breakdown is and if that includes lost revenue. It wasn’t clear to us (yet) exactly what properties the kids were in. The photos are unbelievable. It had to be a major rage. Holy cow. There will be alot of very embarrassed parents who are going to be wonderfully how the heck their sons and daughters got caught up in this.
^^ mom - news reports say that the two ski resorts that were trashed are Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs and The Treetops Resort in Dover Township
My sister is dating someone very high up in U of M’s communication department (the dept that assists the president). I asked him whether or not he was going to have to write a speech to address this. He laughed and said “Thankfully, no.”
What a PR nightmare.
"The motel owner confronted the boys when they checked out and one of them told her his father was an attorney and always wanted to own a small motel. Go ahead and try billing my credit card for the room - we will sue you until you cry yourself to sleep.
The owner was able to get a phone number for the father via the address on the registration and called him. It turned out that he wasn’t a lawyer, he was actually a doctor. He personally drove his son back to the motel the following weekend to apologize and hand over a check to cover room damage and the money we’d had to refund the weekend before."
I hope that this is a father with a conscience, and not just one who just realizes it is the best path legally.
Inexcusable and terrible but I’m thinking of buying 100 of those cheesy 2’x2’ ceiling tiles from Home Depot and driving to Michigan to collect $50k for the “repairs.” The reporter may have decided the broken tiles were the most dramatic damage but ceiling tiles are cheap and easy to replace. I suppose it’s the media exaggerating the facts once again. I’m not disputing the bad behavior. I think the ski lodges should pursue criminal charges. I don’t think the university has much recourse other than to sanction the fraternities.
But Osprey, as stated earlier, it’s not just the cost of repairs. The lost revenue from visitors who a) were either there and had a horrible experience because of the frat idiots (and thus were offered free or discounted rooms) or b) who went somewhere else and will never come back could be many times the cost of the physical damage.
Also, lost revenue for cancellations of existing reservations for the damaged parts of those places.
The actual damage may also be more extensive and expensive than just those ceiling tiles.
It’s also the cost of labor. They have crews working overtime to try and get the place in respectable condition so that, you know, others can use it.
Osprey-
I don’t think its exaggerated. Ceiling tiles and the tracks they sit in damaged, holes in the walls, furniture and ancillaries damaged, carpet stained, etc etc. THis is no laughing matter. Minimizing it is a bit offensive.
I don’t think that the entirety of Osprey’s post minimizes it at all.
joking about driving up to replace cheezy ceiling tiles is making a mockery of the damage. The video shows some of the damage- light fixtures torn off the wall, ceiling tiles and the tracking that holds them, as well and the sprinkler system in the ceiling damaged. Beer, barf you name it in the carpeting, rooms, walls, furniture damaged. If he’d like to drive up and help, that would be great. But this is no joke.
It’s more than a few cheap ceiling tiles. Take a look at the hallway in the accompanying pictures:

Other reports cite broken windows and significant damage to carpets, furniture, floors and ceilings.
Interesting–there were three sororities represented too.
This would have been '82. Of course, that was a long time ago. But it left me with no love for Michigan frats–which, as I said, were like a different world from the one I experienced in A2; I honestly never knew a frat or sorority member (possibly because I transferred in and never lived in a traditional dorm or had the “frosh” experience there.)
Not surprised with the sororities as they do vacation with the frats. I am all now warm and snug and remembering why we don’t rent our place. Ugh. The pics look like hotel rooms but hard to tell. I’ve never been to Gaylord. I will hear from friends the poop on Highlands. No doubt
“was no angel, but when I had too much to drink, I’d get all sleepy-like and turn into a big party pooper. What is it about alcohol which does the exact opposite to others?”
Ha! Me too! Alcohol makes me sleepy and quiet, and want to take a nap - not tear the house down!
I hope when they find photos & videos of who instigated the most damage, that they are charged with felonies.
Who does that?
The Today show just did a segment. Damage estimates now at $100K.
