100k for Umich is silly. 40k in loans is still a lot for UNC-CH. Not even to mention future tuition increases and such. I’d take 10k at BU.

We’re just talking in circles at this point but the NRC ranking is a rigorous study of doctoral programs in the U.S. that is carefully researched and released only once in 10 years to measure true progress or lack thereof that graduate programs have made. The USNWR rankings are just regurgitated peer assessment ratings that aren’t backed up by any substance and suffer from a serious perception time lag since people are very slow to to change their opinions on something once it has been established.

Again, I’m not sure what credentials you have to say for certain that Maryland’s doctoral program is not on par with those other programs. At any rate, this is too narrow of a discussion to really benefit the OP who is looking for a solid foundation in Computer Science which both Michigan and UNC can provide.

Well obviously, since UNC does not offer Engineering. Should we criticize Princeton for not having any professional schools, MIT for not having a Law School, and Brown for not having a Business School? Lets not say with certainlty that graduate program strength can be used as a proxy for undergraduate educational quality since this is not true at all otherwise no Georgetown, Vandy, Emory, Wash U, Dartmouth, or even Hopkins grads would be able to get into top-ranked PhD programs which they all clearly do.

" The USNWR rankings are just regurgitated peer assessment ratings that aren’t backed up by any substance and suffer from a serious perception time lag since…"…Duke is ranked way out of the top 10-20 in so many disciplines.

“100k for Umich is silly.”

…and yet thousands do it every year.

Taking on $100,000 in debt is stupid no matter how many people do it.

10K at BU. This is coming from a UNC graduate.

@rjkofnovi - did you really post a one-day weather outlook indicating storms in the Carolinas to counter UNC’s weather advantage over UM? Really??

^^^^You do realize weather and climate are not the same, right?

Over time they pretty much are same thing. Every1 knows what was meant. No reason to get snippy.

BU makes the most sense.

My weather remarks were meant as a joke and a teachable moment.

rjk – Good luck with providing “teachable moments”. CC posters use “weather” to mean “climate” every single day. You’ll stay mighty busy correcting everyone.

OP – What have you decided?

. . . uhh, don’t quit your day job

^^^So much for enlightening the masses. ;-)

Not really, besides Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and a few engineering areas, Duke is top 20 in every other subject in the world according to either USNWR or the NRC. Take your ■■■■■■■■ back to the Michigan forum rjk.

Let’s not nitpick rankings…a degree from a school like Duke is prestigious in any field.

Actually ennisthemenace, Duke is ranked out of the top 20 in almost half the 12 traditional disciplines of the USNWR:

Chemistry #45
Computer Science #27
Earth Sciences unranked
Physics #30
Psychology #21

;)

Not that it matters to the OP. Computer Science with the least debt = BU.

^^^Wow!

“Take your trolling back to the Michigan forum rjk.”

Says the Duke ■■■■■ in a discussion about UNC and Michigan…

I’m disappointed in you Alexandre. I would expect nothing less from rjkofnovi but I am surprised to see a knowledgeable and mature individual such as yourself go out of your way to fabricate rankings, obfuscate my intended point, and take a cheap shot at another good school (which happens to be my alma mater). I clearly mentioned that I was referring to Duke programs that were ranked out of the top 20 by both USNWR and NRC which only Chemistry and Earth Sciences fall under. By the way USNWR has Duke’s Chemistry at #42 (not #45), Earth Sciences at #45 (not unranked), Physics at #29 (not #30), and Computer Science at #25 (not #20). The NRC has these disciplines all in the top 20.

Computer Science is a highly lucrative and sought-after major so the OP should have no problem covering $30K worth of debt after graduation from UNC with a job from places like Cisco, Google, etc. UNC, as a university and for Computer Science, is in a completely different league than BU and is well worth $30K. My stance woud be different if the OP wanted to major in English or Psychology.

Why would a Duke ■■■■■ recommend his arch rival over another school? That makes no sense.
