University of North Carolina 2012 DECISIONS

gijonman: congrats! just curious, was it your essays that got you in? GPA/SATs seem pretty low for NC OOS. great job though, have you heard from the other schools yet?

how would he have known?

i wrote an essay about how the book The Fountainhead inspired me. I think it was my essays; the fact that i had 16 EC's; how i proved what i wanted to do with my EC's, and also my blurbs. I was very shocked to have gotten in, wasn't expecting it at all it was like a dream getting in.

Other schools: Univ of Wisconsin- Accepted
Univ of Michigan- deferred(they dont read essays)
Applied to a decent amount Regular, but only Cornell might be above UNC and if i end up getting into Michigan that could be above as well.

Also i had no strings to help me get in or hooks.

Whoa, crazy stuff, I wrote about the Fountainhead too.

Maybe they just love Ayn Rand.

I also applied to UMich, and got accepted... but so far I think UNC has some definite advantages over UMich... lower cost, warmer weather, closer to home :)

yep like i never expected to get into UNC so i never considered it as like a potential number 1 for me cuz i didnt want to get heartbroken. But thinking about it, UNC has a lot of advantages, better male to female ratio, cheaper, better weather, better systems of majors, etc.... Like Mich was my number 1 pre deferral now i think i'll probably end up going to UNC or possibly cornell(if i get in despite my bad Calc grade)

well I don't know about better male to female ratio... guess that depends on whether you're a guy or a girl :P

Both are really good schools, with amazing programs and great opportunities... it'll be interesting to see where you (and I) end up! I didn't app to cornell, the other school I'm interested in is UVA but I won't know about that until april :(

to snoz: i was not in NCSSM...i didn't even know about it. i probably would've applied if i had known about it.

Accepted

[] GPA weighted: Not sure what scale we're using here, lol! Apparently NC uses a 6-point scale? CA uses only a 5-point scale, so I don't know what's going on.
[] GPA unweighted: 4.0
[] Rank or % estimate: 1/811 (anyone with a 4.0 is ranked 1 at my school)

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Pretty good, maybe excellent, depending on who the reader is, lol. I'm pretty sure I wrote about choir for both essays.
[] Teacher Recs: My school doesn't allow you to read your recs, but I know my teacher (who I had for two years for history) likes me a lot and works hard on each rec.
[] Counselor Rec: Unsure; as you can see, I attend a large school with many people applying for private and OOS colleges, so I don't think my GLC would be as devoted to my rec as some of the other applicants who got accepted.
[] Hook (if any): Erm... I'm a minority? And my devotion to choir, I guess.

[] State or Country: California

[li] Important ECs: Choir - Regional Honor Choir 2006 & 2007; Choir - Intermediate Women's Show, section leader (2005-2006); Choir - Advanced Chamber, president (2006-2008); Choir - Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus, a nonprofit organization that tours Europe for three weeks giving goodwill concerts (summer 2007); Spring Musical, sextet and chorus (2006); I also got accepted into All-State this year, though I didn't put it on my app because I hadn't known at the time.
[/li]

[/ul]Other Factors:
I'm ridiculously obsessed with UNC, I guess, haha! Also, I wasn't afraid to show some of my weaknesses, such as my disbelief at doing so much with choir, and I stayed true to myself on my app and highlighted how much I grew over the years via choir, rather than just listing accomplishments. I think that definitely helps.

General Comments/Congratulations/etc: I think the other deferred applicants definitely know how I feel! I was hoping this forum would make me feel better about my deferral, but seeing everyone else's credentials made me feel worse! we are ALL overachievers, it's almost sickening. I think i was mainly shocked because Tulane University offered me a Presidential Scholarship ($24,000 a year) to go there and I didn't even apply for it, so I thought my chances were pretty good for other schools. But as far as I can tell, EVERYONE in this forum is qualified to go to UNC and should be able to- no wonder the admissions office has such a hard time deciding! Good luck

"AP/IB taken/scores: IB Diploma Candidate (I havent seen any other IB people in this forum! how strange)"

Well, actually, I was an IB Diploma Candidate, but I dropped IB because of conflicts with my schedule—IBSL Math and Chamber Singers were both first period and my counselors wouldn't rearrange my schedule, so, since I favor choir more, I dropped IB and replaced it with five APs, lol.

The thing about Tulane is—correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Tulane's still feeling the impacts of Katrina and rebuilding. I dunno, not trying to discredit you or anything, but I think Tulane's trying hard to recruit more people to go.

when does RD come out?

Hi Y'all,

I am currently a sophomore at UNC. I transferred in from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. I am a Week of Welcome (WOW) coordinator for the upcoming year. I was wondering if there is anything you would like to have that first week between move in and classes that you feel would be a fun way to become acclimated to the most amazing school on the planet. This can range from social events, to anything you'd like to know more about, or anything you'd like to see. Basically- no idea is a bad idea, and I'd be really really happy to hear your thoughts, because that week is dedicated to you guys!!!

Feel free to respond on this discussion board or to private message me.

Thanks!!!
