Hey everyone, if you've looked at the UPenn supplement for 2013-2014, you'll notice that the admissions staff has included a very peculiar and interesting essay topic. The prompt is: "Ben Franklin once said, 'All mankind is divided into three classes: those that are immovable, those that are movable, and those that move.' Which are you?"

How are you approaching this essay? I'm saying that I'm immovable in terms of the fact that I focused all my energy into pursuing a particular career when I realized that some of my other aspirations wouldn't work out. What is your idea / interpretation of this prompt? Let me know!

This is a stupid essay prompt. It’s better than some I’ve heard but I don’t particularly like this one. I don’t even know which I’d choose.

What’s the link to where you found this? Because I think that this is the old essay topic…

One way to look at it - the immovables are not adapted to deal with change, and although they may hold power if given it in the past, they will not endure since times change. The movables are the vast herd of followers. The MOVERS are those who are adaptable, can see opportunity, and choose to lead. It is good to be a mover, but it is possible to put an extra spin on it, what are the qualities you might bring to being a mover? Here is the part about service to others and the common good, and your particular passions.

Just one way to go about it.

I think this is the new supplement, different from what the OP stated. Not entirely sure though:

Based on the date used by Dean Furda, link in post 6 seems to be accurate for this application season.

The supplement last year had 2 questions: the Ben Franklin quote about immovable, movable, or one who moves, and another that was similar to the one in the link in post #6 (describing specific interests based on which Penn school you’re applying for). The one posted by Dean Furda is probably the main one, but there might also be another short essay question they’re waiting to reveal later on. Just a speculation, though.

Thank you guys so much for the updates and information!

I think there is only 1, but I hope they don’t decide to surprise us later on.
