University of Texas at Austin Class of 2023 Admissions

x

Unfortunately there are only so many spots available and not all deserving kids can get in. I think some of the frustration is when kids who are auto admit (in the top 6 percent) don’t get into their majors even though, from our personal perspective, these students also worked hard and have impressive resumes (in ALL areas - ECs, volunteer, test scores, etc). It’s hard when you see them not get in, knowing everything they’ve done, and yet others not ranked as high get in to that same major. Not trying to take anything away from those that did get in - I am sure very deserving too. And I understand there are differences in essays, ECs, etc. although these are subjective. Just wondering what the intended purpose of this “auto admit” 6 percent state law is and if it should be a thing of the past, if it doesn’t matter in the end, if UT can’t fit them all in? And considering this percentage has shrunk in the last few years from 10 to 8 to 7 and now 6 percent - hard to see these kids not get accepted. Some auto admit kids will not go to UT if he or she cannot study his or her chosen major. Tough to understand.

@collegerigged My student got in as a non auto admit instate to one of the three most competitive majors that posters keep referencing, having perfect college entrance exam scores, straight As, and taking the most rigorous schedule of APs. So I don’t think UT is turning away highly qualified students for less qualified ones. I do think “less qualified” applicants get into less competitive majors and some highly qualified ones get rejected from some highly selective majors (always sad).

I also think you are correct when you mention that sometimes unqualified applicants get accepted due to connections. We saw that this year too. Thinking we may live in the same town but go to a different private school than you do. I’m so sorry that happened and that you are upset by it. I’ve heard many are, especially since it looks like they only took about six from each of the three big private schools in our town. I know it seems that they took spots that may have gone to others, and maybe they did. They didn’t get into competitive majors though either. This happens at all universities unfortunately.

I hope you are feeling better soon and making plans for next year:)

Not supporting or rejecting but in CA the top 9% are guaranteed admission to a UC, but not the student’s choice. you apply to the schools u want to attend and if u are rejected by those the UC system picks one for you. There is a spectrum too. UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego at the top and UC Merced, UC Riverside on the lower end. Though being placed in the top 9% is a factor for consideration at all schools. Sounds like an approach like this could benefit TX. idk.

My child was admitted to McCombs but I think its now down to UCLA (notice comes out in March) and TCU. Grateful and humbled for so many acceptances to wonderful schools.

@collegemom111111 yup, we are in California too

@T20hopeful2023 - agree somewhat. I feel Rice prepares you better for further research/education vs UT makes you a better/practical engineer ready for industry after undergrad, but of course Rice is more exclusive. I have one son at Rice, so was hoping that would help my senior in ED, but didn’t. Not having high hopes for his RD approval! Plus even if he gets in, it’ll be hard to say no to UT scholarship - decisions!

@kli586 we’re in-state, auto admit, DS (and one of his friend) got honors merit scholarship from Cockrell though I don’t see it on his UT app portal.

@dogwood18 UT and Austin are wonderful welcoming places. Please don’t judge by those who hold a grudge on this page. OOS students are embraced!

A little bit confused…I received an email from UT yesterday that I had an update regarding my application. I was accepted back in December, but am still awaiting Honors reports. Cannot seem to find any new information on the portals. Emailed them to see. Did this happen to anyone else?

@applicantXIX go to the honors tab and then hit details. the message is in there. my D basically says need more time to review.

@applicantXIX Yes. Check the “details” of your Honors tab - the subtle change added the word “still” to the honors tab and clarified in the detail - basically extending the time for their review through Feb.

curious how many of the high number rejections would have been auto-admit under the 10% rule but didn’t make it under the 6% rule - those in the 7% to 10% range that is.

Does anyone know if you can apply to double major before attending the University?

@juststaycool thank you for that!

My first post here. DS got rejected at UT with 1500 SAT, 4.21 weigh GPA. Had applied to Health Sc.
Has got in 7 schools with scholarships in 6.
IU Bloomington with 80 % tuition schol. Casewestern with 20 %. Purdue schol not known.
Dont think we could afford to send her to UT OOS anyway.

Hello! I am hoping to see if anyone knows any statistics regarding PACE students. I have a friend who was admitted into the PACE program but had wanted to major in RTF. She is willing to accept, but she is not sure if after one year they will accept her into her desired major (as on the website they say this could happen). I really want her to come to UT with me next year but I definitely understand her concern. If you know anything about her chances of admission into her major after fulfilling PACE requirements, I would love to hear. Thank you all!

You assume I did not take the time and you are mistaken. I actually know the system well. In these cases, looking at the personal indexes of these students would have worsened their chances.

@sloan4167 I can’t tell who / what you are responding to?

I checked my admissions status on the website and it said “We regret that we are not able to offer you admission at this time. Thank you for your interest in The University of Texas at Austin. After a careful review of your application materials, we regret that we are not able to offer you admission at this time.” Does this mean that I was rejected or that I was deferred and will possibly hear back at a later date?

@jensen25501, unfortunately, that means you have been rejected. They really do need to change their wording. This question has come up numerous times. Good luck to you.

Calling them now as DS was rejected but his portal says “out of state” on it - can’t access upload documents tab because he’s been booted out of the system essentially - so can’t send proof of residency…and on hold for 15min now, but calling from overseas…good times
