@joe77055 sorry to hear about your UT issue… so where did you D get in? What were her stats?
I think a lot of what people consider to be “broken” about UT’s admissions is a result of the state imposed mandates such as the top 10% admissions law. So, if anyone is to blame it’s the Texas legislature, not UT admissions.
My son and I attended a McCombs admitted student dinner in Houston earlier this week and one of the UT representatives stated that the freshman admit rate for McCombs this cycle was only 19%, a historically low acceptance rate. When you start getting admissions rates below 20%, there’s simply no guarantees even for high stat applicants. I imagine next years class will be even more competitive because our state’s population is growing so fast and UT has not correspondingly increased the number of availabile incoming students than from when my wife and I were UT undergrads in the mid-1990s.
I have a question regarding the freshman orientation. We logged on today to pay the deposit and multiple sessions are already full. Since all the colleges have just finished announcing their decisions (my son heard from his last two just this past Thursday), how could this be full already? Our son decided early but most kids we know are doing revisits, etc and making decisions up until May 1, which I believe is also the deadline for UT. We were confused by this since we thought we had until May 1 to decide. Unfortunately we can’t make any of the dates available, so just signed up for one in hopes we’d be able to access a “wait list” for one of the sessions that are already full. Anyone with any insight/experience on this? Would be grateful for any info or wisdom y’all can share. Thanks!
@DTXMom, Many students already know they want to go to UT, they accepted and signed up for Orientation as soon as it opened. For students that can’t make any of the sessions in June and July, they will have sessions offered in August, but those will have whatever classes are left for registration. Unlike the first sessions where they reserve spots in classes. With a expected incoming class of 7,900+ students and 7 sessions with each approximate 1,100+ spots, there should be enough for every student to attend the original sessions. But I understand how the options become limited the longer a student waits and that not all dates might fit with other plans.
Thank you @MomJojo. We did not realize orientation was already open for registration, however I don’t know how we could have done it any sooner - the orientation page was only shown to us after we paid the deposit. Hopefully we can make it work for one of the dates available.
@DTXMom With orientation you are correct. You don’t have access to registering until you commit and put a deposit down.
We just came back from an admitted student session this weekend and they said no matter when you go to orientation, there will be plenty of sections available as they open them throughout the summer.
Hello! I was just un-capped!!! Hook 'Em!
Did u get an Email? @cooltimes
Nope! I just checked my portal and it told me I was admitted!! @Pleaseletmeinut
How often are students un-CAPped? Did you appeal @cooltimes ?
@TexasTrue I did appeal! There’s something up with admissions this year… I heard a few rumors of kids getting capped when they were meant to be accepted. Admission off of appeals is very unlikely, but I think more are being accepted this year because of this mistake!
CONGRATULATIONS! And Hook 'em!
My son got uncapped…admitted to McCombs
Have all appeal decisions come out yet? Does nothing on the portal mean the appeal was denied?
My son also got uncapped…and tonight was admitted to McCombs after a successful appeal. We are shocked.
WOW!! My DD just got the email. She had appealed for PACE after Accepting the CAP program. So PACE it is !!! Hook’em Horns, we’ll have two on campus next year!!
My son may be dropping UT due to OOS high tuition.
@UT2324 , @UTexasEx1986 , so did you both appeal?? Did you have NEW information? Our appeal wasn’t much more than asking for it over CAP. We had no new info or special circumstances etc.
My DS was capped but got admitted today via an appeal. His portal changed but also got an email shortly after. He applied Comp Sci (1st major) when capped. Appeal was to be considered for 2nd choice major Math. He got admitted Undeclared in College of Natural Science (where both CS and Math majors are) . Nothing new offered during appeal other than 1st sem Senior transcript.
a few kids from DD’s school were un-capped today and atleast one admitted to McCombs. I am shocked. The student appealed but had no new information (that we are aware of). Now I kind of wish we had appealed. Oh well - DD is happy with her choice.
