Is anyone doing the CAP program at UTSA?
@austx9, I started a blog in the UT section called. ’ UT CAP at UTSA '. If you reach out there you will find out their is already a GroupMe thing setup with a bunch of others doing UT CAP at UTSA. Good luck.
@DTXMom Also regarding orientation, kids could sign up beginning on March 5. My daughter went into her portal to sign up an hour after it opened for the first date of orientation, and there were only 6 slots left, so it definitely filled up quickly and kids that don’t commit until late, get the less desirable options for orientation. It all works out in the end and remember, AP scores don’t come out until July, so there will be a lot of adding and dropping in August as well so classes will open and things will shift around. Hook’em!
@cooltimes , @gingytx , @UTexasEx1986 so will you Accept this new offer?? My DD is through the roof excited to get into PACE. UT was a huge reach for her. Already Accepted. Already paid the entry fee. Done!
Anybody here is paying FULL OOS tuition to go to UT CS? worth it?
@TXDad56 You mentioned getting into UT this year was BIG. I know its a competitive school, but what is different about this year?
@Meadow530 Thanks for residence hall link…interesting
@DTXMom My son was accepted into McCombs in early Jan and he still can’t decide what school he wants to attend. He loves UT, but he was not offered any merit like he was from other schools so its a difficult decision. I feel he is going to have issues with orientation, housing etc when he finally does decide. Thanks for asking the questions and thanks to those that responded.
Just FYI to those of you that have paid the $200 housing deposit – yesterday they opened up the roommate selection portal …
@Smyhre , we saw a great deal of very highly qualified applicants, instate and OOS get CAPped or Denied, respectively. 1400+ SATs, 32-36 ACTs, top 10%ers with 4.2 GPAs+, but not Top 6%, didn’t get into UT this Year. We heard that UT reduced the number of Acceptances which puts any type of Acceptance as a premium. It’s Texas’ flagship college, nationally ranked and very affordable for instate and more affordable than most privates for OOS applicants. Each year it has been getting harder to get in, even more so as they tightened the Auto Admit down to 6%. So weight yours option carefully. UT is a great school, like many others, but well worth it.
@TXDad56 Yeah I heard it was because last year more students accepted than they anticipated. That’s why there was a housing shortage last year. I know my son’s high school had no one other than the top 6% and that has never happened before. (We are local.) I predict it will continue to get worse each year.
@comptechmom My daughter and I were at an event this past weekend for admitted students and even for next year they said they won’t have enough housing so if people haven’t done it quickly, they should do it asap. She is living in a private dorm so it’s not as much of an issue for us, but for kids that are having trouble committing and don’t have a spot, I can only imagine the anxiety.
@Txdad56 My daughter will be an OOS student. Texas as an OOS school is not necessarily more affordable than private colleges. My D was offered about 100K to attend a good private college. It would have been significantly cheaper than UT is going to be. For an OOS student it is right in line with private colleges, but her program is one of the best in the country and was her top choice so we know it is worth it for the opportunity.
@Txdad56 McCombs at UT certainly represents an unexpected and great option for our son. He may choose to attend McCombs but is still considering other options as well. My guess is that he will ultimately choose UT.
@UTexasEx1986 and the others that got ‘unCAPped’, did you hear of others at your schools that also won their appeals? My DD, who’s senior class is only about 200 students, had 6 won appeals. Those odds fly directly in the face of what we’ve been told for years in that Appealing denials/CAP is a waste of time, without significantly NEW data or an egregious mistake etc.
@TXDad56 Thank you. We both know what an incredible program McCombs is, which is why he is taking so long to decide. The scholarships offered at the other schools also have great bs and have made them very attractive. However, he keeps considering UT. Again appreciate your response.
So the DD got the basic $1750/semester Subsidized Loan Financial Aid (FA), plus plenty of Unsubsidized loans. So where to we look for, or how do we find out about those other “scholarship” applications we filled out during the TexasApps process?
My D won her appeal also. We had a consultant that helped with our original application. When we decided to appeal, he reinforced how unlikely success was - stopping just short of saying it was futile. Although we did have some “new” information which likely met UT’s stated rules of relevant to appeals, other information included like performance in the fall semester probably did not. I/we were in shock when it came back successful. We felt like a mistake had been made originally, but many many people thought the same. When UT changed the timeframe in which they were going to accept appeals it seemed to offer a glimmer of hope.
Based on just anecdotal information, it does seem like more appeals were granted (but not a majority or even a substantial number) than in the past and we don’t know of too many cases where the basis of the successful appeals was limited to “new” info. required under the stated rules vs. just giving them another chance to get it right. It is all very confusing and I would love to see some statistics on appeals filed and % successful. We feel very lucky and maybe even a bit guilty given how many people had strange results.
I will say, after visiting UT and A&M back to back with my daughter in the past week. UT felt like home bc my wife and I both went there and some of the amazing A&M traditions feel a bit weird to us but we were blown away by the amount of attention given to us by the super impressive head of the English dept at A&M. I’m going to get myself in trouble with this next comment (based not only on the visit but also having hired and worked with possibly hundreds of Bschool graduates from both schools - and I know life isn’t lived in generalizations and what I’m suggesting is very subjective) but what I said to my wife was “let’s say D was driving off campus and got a flat tire and was parked at the side of the road with her flashers on, which college has students that would be more apt to stop and help her out” and neither of us hesitated and said A&M. There is something special about A&M. We will let our daughter make her own decision and I’m guessing she will choose UT but, I feel good both schools are great.
@joe77055 Congrats to you and the family. Did you also get the news on April 1st like the others and now just posting? Based on a really quick review of the last 3 years of this similar thread, I only found 1 person who won their appeal last year 2018, none the year before 2017 and in 2016 they were only talking about Waitlists, which we haven’t heard any talk about that this year.
I too feel A&M is still a great school but like my daughter, she thought there were a lot of oddities and bits to deal with. Still, it would be a great college experience.
Now if you D had a burnt orange shirt while stranded on the side of the road, I’m not so sure who would have stopped…
So here’s an article written by the ‘UT Admissions Guy’, concerning the record number of UT Austin Admits this year from appeals. Nothing definitive as to why, just speculation. I think one thing he doesn’t emphasize or emphasize enough is that those that got into UT on appeals this year, wanted to get into UT so bad, they disregarded the “fact” that almost nobody gets in on appeal. I’m sure the yield from these appeals are way higher than the old wait list method.

Is there anything special or unanticipated that we should know about parking permits? We read all the info and it looks like she can’t enter the lottery until July. We want an R permit and have located for closest 2 garages next to her likely dorm. I feel like I understand all the details but just want to ask if there is anything (good or bad) that maybe we wouldn’t know to consider. Like does it make a difference if staffed or unstaffed?
