S2 capped so he won’t be joining S1, a junior at UT. It’s dissapointing. They had similar stats but it wasn’t meant to be. I’m disappointed for him, but it is what it is. TAMU it is. Best of luck to all still waiting.
My knowledge of the UT admission process is a work in progress. My son applied OOS back in October for engineering and his application is still under review. I know there have been waves of decisions over the past couple months and from the sounds of last nights wave, there were a wave of decisions for in state only ? which is called capped ? and allows there students to begin at an alternate campus and transfer to Austin after a year if all goes well? It kind of sounds like the next wave at the end of the month will be rejections for OOS and those remaining In state? Am I wrong with that assumption or does the community think there are still some acceptances remaining to come?
On the “first come, first served comment”, my daughter’s application was submitted by September 1st- added a rec or two by 9/15- she was capped last night. I was looking at the course requirements for CAP- she’s already taken all of those in either AP or Dual Credit! Why would she want to pay for and take them again? I’m guessing there’s another CAP thread so we don’t bog up this line with CAP questions. Good luck to those still waiting- waiting is hard, but I’m not sure I feel any better with the CAP notice.
@momtomany05 I have seen some posts from RD (12/1 deadline) applicants who have been accepted.
@kyledad We are in the same position as you - OOS, still under review for engineering since Oct. I have heard of high stat cases getting accepted on 2/1 in previous cycles. These applicants would’ve been a shoo in so why did they only hear on the very last day? As much as we want to, I’m not sure that we can put a pattern to how they are rolling out decisions. We’re still hoping…
Two years ago my LHS heard mid February but another discipline of study
My current senior hoping for still more McCoombs spots still open
@kyledad I don’t think your assessment is correct on OOS students, or INS for that matter. First, this thread hasn’t received posts from many of them, possibly because they haven’t been admit or denied, secondly, because this seems to be a strongly dominated IS thread so to make that assumption on OOS isn’t founded at all. You are right that last night was heavily dominated by IS receiving CAP but again, you are only hearing from a small percentage that post to this board. Anything can happen next Friday and, even for those that applied priority, Admissions has written that decisions can still be deferred until March 1. I think if you haven’t heard yet, you still have a shot and there’s no reason to assume it will be a rejection. Wishing all good luck that are yet to receive any notice!
DD got CAP. 1340/1360, currently top 18%. It was a long shot. I’m glad the wait is over.
My daughter applied 10/7 and was admitted 1/18. And received LAH. Non auto admit, COLA/Psych 1450 SAT/32 ACT, varsity athlete, camp counselor, summer job, volunteer hours. So- I’m not sure first come/first served applied to her. We are thrilled for her but I’m truly sorry for those equally qualified who were capped. This process is so tough.
@kansha Thank you. I don’t think my son has extremely high stats. (33 ACT C, 35 M, 34 S, 32 R, 30 E) 3.87/4.0 UW GPA 4.07/4.0 W. 7 AP’s Multi sport kid Captain for baseball. So far he is in at UW Madison, Twin Cities, Penn St, and UGA. Deferred Michigan, Tulane, and denied GT and as of last night UVA. Still waiting on a bunch of reach RD schools but based off how things look this year, he may have to choose between the first four. Good Luck to your child!
@Meadow530 The Validictorian at a TX school was also capped last night. She was #1 out of 69, so admissions has made some mistakes for sure. I’m sure it will work out but that is very frustrating.
@kyledad What I meant to say is that even high stat kids have heard on the last day when logic dictates that they should’ve heard earlier. So it’s premature to assume that you have been rejected if you are priority and haven’t heard yet. We have all waited this long, it’s just a few more days now. That being said…congratulations! Those are all great schools and I’m sure he’ll be happy doing engineering at any one of them. Good luck!
CAP over here!! guess it just wasn’t meant to be…
btw, for those who got cap are y’all gonna do it or just move on?
So many strange stories of National Merit, 35 ACT great kids not getting in…did they have a system malfunction last night!!!
I follow this blogger on FB and he posted this piece this morning. I found it informative and it might be interesting to some of you. It has info on the UT admissions roll out, when and how to appeal a decision, what the numbers look like this year, etc. It looks like UT is making 2,000 fewer admissions offers this year. (Offering admission to 17,000 vs. 19,000 last year). In another blog post he outlines the transfer process for those who have their hearts set on UT but didn’t get in this year. https://texadmissions.com/blog/2019/1/26/ut-austin-appeals-fall-2019
Daughter got CAP two years ago and went out of state. She is in Honors college and on Dean’s list and things are working out wonderfully. Son got CAP last night and we aren’t surprised. 31 ACT, non ranking private HS in state. He will be following her out of state to Honors Engineering. I give it two weeks before I get another request to give to Texas Ex’s and college of liberal arts as an alum. As they told me in the registrar’s meeting, we don’t consider alumni status. They were very honest, UT gets 50,000 applications for 7500 slots and most of them are taken by auto-admits. We didn’t consider CAP for either student as it only is admission to liberal arts and we did not want UT to dictate the major choice. Best of luck to everyone, know there is a perfect fit out there and hard work does pay off in the end!!!
@Oldhorn - I hate to hear it happened to someone else, but it really does feel like something is very wrong. I mean, even the stats posted here, while not AA, seem like odd CAP choices. I understand there are outliers who are not the right fit, but so many high academic indexes? Very strange.
I think the fact that “yield”, the percent accepted who actually enroll, is very important to top schools now because it impacts their rankings. Although this process seems very disorganized on the surface, maybe they really do have some statistics that say Susie from XYZ HIgh with a 35 ACT will only attend 20% of the time if accepted…so they move on to someone with a 75% chance of attending.
But I’m still annoyed my D got CAPed!
@hstrsphnt I’m really sorry to hear that your daughter was capped also. It makes me feel better to know that there were applicants in the Aug/Sept/Oct admission that were capped. So I stand corrected on my statement. My dd would have gladly accepted PACE, as I am sure all who got capped would, or admitted into LA, with the hopes of internal transfer. My do also has 32 dual credits so I totally understand paying for or taking them again. I will conclude with what everyone already knows…the UT Austin admissions process is a mystery!
@FGTexas My daughter ( with her 35 ACT, 4.0 is/4.5w gpa) would have actually attended as this is one of the high ranking schools that we can actually afford. We are also URM and that didn’t help with admissions either, not that we were wanting that to get us in the door. I’m just stating that even with a “hook”, it still was not enough. Congrats to all who were accepted and to those who were not, I’m disappointed right along with you.
