I applied for Moody originally, and apparently PACE lets you into moody also aside from liberal arts. However, the GPA you need to maintain in the program is higher
@TXDad56 this is what my understanding is as well and, in fact, we think that’s what happened to my D19 at Baylor (she was deferred at Baylor, after being accepted Plan II at UT). I don’t know that UT does this as a rule, but I had read that lots of other schools do, mainly to protect their yield (which drives up rankings).
However, part of the phenomenon is most assuredly major based. Engineering and CS are just crazy competitive now (CS the most).
My daughter that should be AA got CAP tonight, like seemingly everyone else. Top 3%, 1460 SAT. I didn’t think that was even an option? We were totally prepared to not get her chosen major, but this was a shocker.
The MyStatus page says: “We aren’t able to offer you admission to The University of Texas at Austin as a freshman, but we would like you to consider participation in the Coordinated Admission Program (CAP).”
The admissions page says: “Automatic admission to UT Austin is available to top 6% freshman applicants from Texas high schools for summer/fall 2019 and spring 2020.”
So… is this a mistake?
That’s really weird. Her high school is a Texas public high school?
Yep.
@atxmomof2 - something isn’t right - are you sure her high school is reporting her class ranking as top 3% … if so, she is absolutely and automatic admit under the law … of course, she has to be from a Texas high school …
Got CAP’d today. Serious question. Can I agree to the CAP right now and then wait for my other college acceptances in March? Essentially, can I back out of the CAP offer after I agree or is it binding???
Absolutely sure. She requested a meeting with admissions, so we’ll get it sorted out, I guess. Really brought down the evening in any case.
@atxmomof2 good luck and please update us - that is crazy …
That’s a huge hassle @atxmomof2
It could always just be an administrative mistake on their end. When my daughter first got access to her portal, UT had her classified as OOS and - get this - with a previous transcript from a school in India. We have never lived in India or anywhere outside TX.
It took a few days to be fixed. We were going to email if it didn’t self correct in time, but it did. (This was back in October).
But nobody wants these kinds of mistakes this late in the game! Argh.
My daughter (in-state) also got CAP tonight, applied to engineering. She was not auto-admit, rank 95/1350, 4.38 GPA, 34 ACT, 1540 SAT (800 math), varsity captain, NHS, NCL volunteer, National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with distinction, summer internship, great recs…
Oh well, so far she is accepted at Michigan Engineering. Still waiting on a bunch of schools applied RD.
In state with a 1530 (800 math). Amazing recs from UT alums and head master of my school. 4.2 gpa, non ranking school. Tons of leadership and out door experience. Solid essays. Applied to McCombs. Capped
Soooo frustrated. I know kids with 1300s who got into McCombs and who didn’t have much else going for them. Received large scholarships to SMU, TCU, TAMU, with honors at several. Business honors at boulder. In utter shock over the cap. UT was the dream. Should I appeal? Is it even worth the bother? Is there anything I can do to change the decision or get in?
In state with 1450 SAT. Excellent recs from government officials, teachers, and advisors who have known me for years. Unique one of a kind extracurriculars that have allowed me to travel around the country. But, accepted EA into Georgetown, TAMU, Penn State, SMU, etc. Don’t be disappointed everyone! It just means it wasn’t meant to be, another door will open.
@redwarrior If your appeal is going to simply state your disagreement with the decision, don’t. My friend knows someone who works for UT’s admission team. UT seems to know exactly who they want in their school. Students sometimes don’t get in simply because UT thinks they are just not the right fit. With stats like yours, you’ll do great elsewhere!
My son was CAPPED tonight and I am super pissed! He has worked his butt off and really wanted to go to UT. High scores, Eagle Scout, so many extra curricular, high grades, top of his class… just like others I saw got capped. It’s not right.
@atxmomof2 I think there must be something wrong system wide. Daughter’s friend who is valedictorian of their Texas high school was capped tonight. That’s goes against state law so they need to fix this ASAP.
Yea I just checked I got admitted to Cockrell last week or so from out of state.
you need to appeal
Has anyone heard for architecture major?
My daughter also got capped tonight! 1460 SAT/35 ACT,in state, non ranking high school. Great ec’s, great recs, good essays. To be honest, I’m starting to think UT Austin policy for admissions is “first come, first served.” I think that those who submitted applications in August, September and October were admitted and UT continued to admit from that pool until all seat were filled. I truly don’t believe they did a “holistic review” on all applicants. I don’t believe that they read all the applications and essays from all applicants that applied before their set deadlines. I believe once they met their quota from the pool mentioned above they capped/rejected everyone else that came after. I may be wrong but that’s how I see it. To many good, highly qualified applicants getting capped or rejected tonight!
