DS got in last night OOS McCombs
Congratulations to all of those who have heard! It’s not easy, and you should be super proud of your accomplishments. This process is ridiculous and I’m starting to dislike UT even more than before (I’m an Aggie:). My daughter’s myStatus has looked the same, in review, since early September, but this morning there is a To-Do category that indicates they are verifying her transcript. I assumed since that has been under the Done category that it was completed weeks, maybe months, ago. Any thoughts?
My son is still waiting. UT is one of is top picks. He has 7 out of 7 acceptance at some really good schools: Baylor, Trinity, TCU, A&M
Applied 10/20 Early Action
SAT : 1430
GPA 3.7 UW
Lots of leadership and EC
2 years doctor shadowing
Good amount of AP
Major: Biology (Pre-med)
Top 15% in state at very competitive school
Fingers crossed he hears before Christmas
@Poppyseedz My son received an email around 8:00 PM EST, Friday and checked the portal. Good luck to you.
My son is from RRHS, Top 5%, Auto Admit. Applied Computer Science. Still waiting.
Have they ever released a wave or ripple after the second Friday in December or is January the next possible time?
can I ask if they actually admit by date of application for OOS? I saw two Moody admits yesterday and my daughters stats are definitely on par with those and she has not heard.
@robmomtx completely agree on ridiculous process and I’m a Longhorn. I feel like the school is deliberately playing mind games with applicants and these waves that seem to be random.
@laurawrites fingers crossed for more news from COLA soon!
…
As much as I don’t like the waiting and how they release the acceptances and handle/deal with parents, I feel they may have a good reason. Maybe they want to give these (early accepted) kids a special treat. They probably have a good reason to be accepted. One kid from my son’s school I know got accepted last night. He’s pretty much top on all the stuff he’s involved and more.
We should just consider Feb 1 as UT’s date to release acceptance and… stay off the internet.
@upsatescmom, not necessarily. Also stats are not the only thing they look at. They also look at activities, leadership and letters of recommendation. Unfortunately, only about 8% -10% of the entire class will be OOS or foreign students as the school is bound by legislative mandate to have the class made up of certain percentage of in state residents.
@icedmachiato, probably the smartest thing I have read on the internet today! Nobody is playing mind games with anyone. If people are feeling this worked up, probably time to take a break from this and other boards and focus on enjoying the holiday season.
Admissions tells you when you will hear by and that is 2/1 for priority deadline and 3/1 for regular. The school isn’t stupid. They know that they are competing with other universities for top students and they identify the ones most likely to be courted by other schools. Those are going to be students with very high test scores and class rankings AND remarkable accomplishments. If they admit those students early so they can get them excited about attending and have them feel vested in being a longhorn early, when the acceptances from Rice, Vanderbilt, Cornell, MIT, etc start rolling in, they will likely choose UT. Having these high ranking students matriculate at UT raises UT’s ranks on all of those ‘best of lists’. You know who loves to see UT rise in those rankings? Well heeled alumni… and then they write checks to UT. That’s just how it is.
There are going to be a lot of disappointed teenagers and parents when all is said and done because not everyone gets into his top choice school for whatever reason. That is life. There’s a great book called “Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania” Have your kids read it over the break! I made my son read it. He found it very helpful.
We spoke with our area UT admissions counselor this week. For the record, I have a current UT student and also a high school senior who is an auto admit for Fall 2020. My senior is ranked #1 in a competitive 500+ school year with a 36 ACT score and amazing EC’s and leadership roles. This child has not received notification of their major yet. The admissions counselor told us that they have had record applications this year (especially to certain programs) and that these waves do not reflect in a negative way on the students who are still waiting to hear back about their majors (specifically that they are not less worthy applicants). She said the holistic review process means that the applications are assigned for review in batches and that many just haven’t been looked at yet. I totally agree that there is a lot of stress to this whole process!
Son was accepted to McCombs last night, 12/13.
Applied in September.
In state, White male
Non auto admit
Non-ranking school. Assume ranking of 13% or better based on school profile info
ACT 34
Weighted GPA: 4.44/4.0
All honors and AP classes when available
Eagle Scout, Mu Alpha Theta treasurer, Math club, international math modeling competitions, NHS, club soccer for 10 years, school soccer jr high and high school, lacrosse in jr high and high school, AP Scholar (3 tests so far)
So stressful. Good luck to all.
I am OOS and was admitted last night for the College of Liberal Arts. I also applied to the Plan II honors program, but the honors tab says that my application is still under review for Plan II. Does this mean I will not get into Plan II Honors? When will I hear back from them?
@college2019 --Same my student was admitted last night but honors application still under review. To be expected I think with a Dec admit.
@Jennibc I’m also a Longhorn … but I’m not going to pretend that because a student got accepted early at UT that’s going to tilt in their favors when the likes of Rice, Vanderbilt, Cornell, MIT, etc… comes calling. All things being equal, aka financially, we (and most applicants) will probably jump at those acceptances in a heartbeat.
The only thing/problem with these wave of acceptances is that they are consistently inconsistent in every facets. That’s probably why the majority of the parents on this board are frustrated with this whole non-transparent admissions process. This is the main reasons there a bunch of people out there making some pretty pennies by just advising students/parents on how to get into UT.
@mikeinsugarland I am not ‘pretending,’ that’s the rationale of schools to accept the highest performing students early. Whether it works or not is debatable. That said, I know people who would end up choosing UT engineering over the likes of those other schools because of cost. When you are middle class and those other schools decide you can afford 75K a year, 26K is a lot more attractive. One of the worst things we can do for our children in saddle them with student debt.
If they are using the same algorithm (or regression model as they have it on their document) for every one why would some be announced first and others later?
They may be taking time for manual review to be inclusive.
so sad i havent heard back OOS McCombs yet. do we know if we will hear back next week friday? or is it waiting for jan 31 now?
