@RayTX You’re just being modest … your son has excellent credentials - don’t think in-state factor in. Congrats to him !!
My son was capped
In state
35 ACT
AP Dist Scholar
NMSF
11 AP
Strong band ECs.
He was disappointed but he’s already accpeted at A&M w/ $.
I’m only frustrated because there are so many really good students in Texas that were rejected like my son. I suppose the flagship university can’t take everyone, but the top 6% thing puts a ton of kids ahead of more qualified students that may have been in a much more challenging environment.
I’m also really disappointed to see so many OOS acceptances that had lower stats than instate that were rejected. Nothing against those kids, but there’s something fundamentally wrong about that, IMO.
Not only that, I’ve seen on Reddit this morning, two Yale accpet and one MIT accept that were turned down at UT. LOL
@Colhopeful728 @123vca CAP is not binding … and yes you have to wait until Feb 6. Please note of this:
“UT Arlington and UTSA have limited the number of students they will enroll in CAP and accepted agreements from eligible students on a first-come, first-served basis. Once they received enough agreements to reach their limits, the CAP agreement was closed for UT Arlington and UTSA.”
So you need to act quickly at 6PM on Feb. 6. I have read that they filled up within hours.
Lastly, completion of CAP only guaranteed you into a COLA major - if you want business or engineering or computer science, you have to apply again.
@mikeinsugarland - Thank you! That is what we needed to hear. My DD is still waiting on other schools, but she wanted to go to UT really bad, so if the offers form other schools doesn’t pan out then at least this is a chance to got to UT, so we will make this the fall back plan. Yes we understand it will not be guarantee for her major of Engineering or Biology, but it is something.
The other two schools she got full admit on, didn’t really exactly have what she is looking for…though it is a gamble to not take those offers.
I can only hope my daughter get in to one of her other schools.
Yes, I am making my daughter write an appeal letter. Really odd to have kids accepted to Harvard, MIT, and other IVY schools getting rejected or capped at UT
I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. It’s exactly how we’re feeling this morning.
My daughter’s friend got accepted into Harvard but Capped at UT…
Yes, I feel like something is wrong. A bit upset.
Everyone considering CAP - make sure to read the full details in the email your kid gets and the acceptance page on my status - there are alot of tricky things with CAP. You can’t transfer in your AP credits because it will leave you with very little/nothing left to take from the very limited choice of first year classes made available to CAP kids. That might work for you to take classes over again, see the material a second time, and have a shot at that 4.0 that you’ll need to ever hope to xf out of COLA into another major. Just make sure you fully read and understand. There are disclaimers all over that page as to why CAP may not be the best choice and why they may have a much more fulfilling freshman year at another school. If your final destination is COLA, I would highly recommend CAP and PACE even moreso, because they are both great programs. For any other intended major, I think it would be like living groundhog day over when you have to apply to your major again next year and fight against all the already on-campus austin kids who also want to xfer. I believe they’ll have the priority over your CAP or PACE kids. Just buyer beware. Congrats everyone on whatever your future holds.
So does everyone in state that didn’t get Full Admit to UT Austin get CAP?
Are only out of state students get Full Rejection?
Yes, I know CAP is a rejection to UT Austin as well, but just wondering if any would get an actual Rejection letter if they are in state.
I got capped last night. Wanted to get into the Biomedical engineering program which I know is pretty hard to get into. I won’t take CAP because I would have to apply all over again and I already got into 2 of the CAP schools with $$$ and honors. Congrats to those that got in. Maybe I will try to transfer but I think have a great college experience at Baylor or SMU.
I wonder if I should have my daughter go ahead an apply straight to UTSA instead of taking the CAP option.
Agree with everything @texmommm said.
For those looking to CAP at UTSA or UTArlington, be ready before 6PM. You may only have one shot at it. It closed down within 1-2 minutes last year. Once entered it spun for 30-40 seconds before it took the acceptance. Don’t refresh in the middle or it.
Surprised no PACE acceptances out there yet.
For those that got Rejected or Cap’d, no harm in trying the Appeal, even if there’s no new information. Last year was crazy that so many people get in on appeals. BUT, I truly believe that was a major deviation from previous years. So, don’t get your hopes up.
CAP. I think we should start calling the Automatic Admit program for what it is: the “Top 6% of a Zip Code”. It just isn’t the same experience to be the #6 rank of a 100-student body vs Top 25% of a 700-1000 student class in a competitive high school with tons of AP and Leadership opportunities, etc. My DD was the leader of a 300-member organization for 2 years, 3.9+ GPA, Top 12%, recognized at state and national level for her talent, blah, blah - same as other qualified students who were CAP’d.
We were quickly accepted last Fall by TAMU with a Science major and waiting from 4 OOS universities on East and West Coasts with response dates in March/April. Gig Em Aggies!
Some Auto Admits got rejected from both their 1st and 2nd choice major. So this year’s admission seems a bit crazy. Not all Auto Admits are happy either, as they worked so hard at their “Competitive School” and still didn’t get their major of choice.
Feel bad for all those that didn’t make it into UT, my DD included. CAP will not help her as she doesn’t want COLA. If they did CAP for College of Engineering or Biology that would make it worth it. Otherwise, CAP is another name for Junior College to us.
They also rejected lots of OOS students with excellent grades and scores as you can see in this thread. I do agree there were students accepted that had lower stats than the ones that got rejected last night.
My daughter got rejected last night. She applied for Computer Engineering. I don’t understand their thinking, her academic profile:
OOS (Illinois)
US Citizen of Asian Indian ethinicity.
ACT 36 (36,36,36,36)
National Merit Semi-Finalist
US Presidential Scholar - Candidate
SAT2 - Math1- 800, Math2-800, Chem:78
WGPA: 4.5 (school counts PE in GPA, Foreign Lang doesn’t have weighted classes)
AP Courses taken: AP Phys1 - 4, AP Phys2 - 4, AP Chem-4, AP Stats-5, AP Bio-4,AP Micro-4, AP-Macro-4,AP-US Hist-4, AP-Lang-5, AP Calc BC-5
Senior Year: AP Physics-C, Multivariate Calculus and Linear Algebra (Dual Credit), AP Computer Science, AP US Govt
Accepted at: UIUC- Electrical and Computer Engineering; University of Michigan, Purdue and Ohio State
Rejected: Georgia Tech and UT Austin
Applied for Financial Aid
We knew going in that UT Austin would be long shot as they clearly preferred in-state students - 89.22% in 2019.
I find this admission process very frustrating and opaque. I can understand that state universities have lower tuition for in-state students and but don’t understand this crap about “holistic” review process.
I wish the lawsuit against UT Austin in which they prevailed would have been brought up under the Trump Administration just like the lawsuit against Harvard.
Anyways, everybody good luck.
@colhopeful228. CAP is junior college - very funny!!! I appreciate your perspective. There are many other engineering colleges so I’m sure your student will land well…and we will, too! Good luck!!!
No offense intended. It is a good solid pathway for those who wants to go into College of Liberal Arts as it is guaranteed admission to that specific college at UT Austin. Unfortunately, my daughter doesn’t want COLA.
So for her, with all the limitations that CAP has, it doesn’t make sense for her to take CAP. Especially if after one year after all the hard work and all the things she gave up will not guarantee her Engineering or Biology school at UTAustin. Trust me, I was telling my daughter to accept CAP, but reading it more and having the kids start early and then having nearly perfect GPA and not being able to take Scholarship money from either UT or UTSA as you are not really a student at both, it just seems very very risky for my daughter.
UT Austin has the Engineering Program that is 100% matching what my daughter wants, as she really is more into Medical Research and not exactly wanting to go the full medical school to become a MD Doctor route.
I am upset, but understand that there were so many others with better scores, better EC and better everything got CAP too. So, just frustrated and feel sad.
@Colhopeful728, I would have her apply at UTSA. I actually loved my visits to UTSA. They also may give money for high stat kids. My doctor told me to not sleep on UTSA. And that if my ultimate gold was medical school or PHD in engineer, apply to UTSA. I met another student their who is doing lots of research work in the engineering department. If Baylor wasn’t my first option, I would seriously consider UTSA. It is still on my list. Good luck!
my OOS daughter was also rejected and while she does not care much, I kinda do because what I am seeing here is kind of ridiculous. Students with excellent stats were rejected, both in and out of state. I guess I am not seeing how the holistic review works. And if my child was in state and CAP was offered, I would not say yes to that. It is not worth it, UT is not all that and maybe they should not be put on that pedestal they are obviously standing on. There are better schools in the country and in the state of Texas and this is sort of a huge joke. Kids, go to A&M, lots of school spirit, amazing school and playing in a much better conference. Gig 'em!!! LOL!
Any architecture major accepted?
