University of Texas at Austin Class of 2024 Admissions / Preparation

Last night found out my daughter was admitted to CNS and tonight Plan II.

Congratulations mommagee!!!

@chitownseniormom My daughter is a Freshman in BHP. It is a very stressful process. Last year she was accepted into McCombs in the first OOS batch which was in early December, but didn’t hear about BHP until mid February (it was right around President’s Day weekend). She had already committed to UT and didn’t care if she was accepted to BHP (now Canfield BHP) but that was icing on the cake. She loves it and even though first semester only has 1 dinky business class, has been having an incredible experience thus far. Got involved right away, joined a sorority and has met some great people!

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. We’re from Chicago as well.

@UT2024 My daughter in McCombs/BHP has heard (and knows some of them) that some McCombs acceptances have gone out both in and OOS. Good luck!

Thanks so much for your comment @srparent15. Curious when she had her BHP interview? Appreciate your insight. Is there a way to DM you on this forum so we can chat offline?

I don’t think it’s too late for honors. My son received an email yesterday from UT BHP asking him to apply for the Honors program. The deadline for early was Nov 1., but the deadline for regular is Dec. 1.

It’s definitely not too late! You do it through the portal. My daughter received an email yesterday as well. Encouraging her to apply to the honors program in UT CNS.

Has anyone heard of a moody OOS acceptance yet?

We are OOS and I don’t know much about UT Austin but it is very high on my daughter’s list. Are they a straight up standardized score/GPA type school or do extra curriculars matter? This would be for McCombs, by the way. Her stats are 1490, 4.7 weighted, about 36 credits between AP and Dual Enrollment, Girl Scout Gold Award, accomplished musician (drum major, etc) and lots of other high level leadership. What does it take to get in out of state? Application complete since October 15th and says “in review”. Honest feedback welcome.

@hallierem I’m wondering this too!! I am an OOS student and UT is my number 1. I applied to Moody on 9/10 and have been checking everyday since… I’ll let you know if I hear anything.

I read in the reddit board for UT admissions that some one already got a response last week regarding their Chemical Engg. admit. Did anyone here who has applied to Cockerell get a response yet?

@EraseEgo No response from major for auto admit D20 yet…and to top my anxiety levels, she switched majors choice from Arch Engineering as choice 1 to the dual degree of Architecture and Architectural engineering as choice 1 and then ArchE as choice 2 ? the waiting is brutal. With these too very competitive programs we already had the talk about “let’s start focusing on other schools”. Last year the dual program received 1000 applications and 120 got accepted.

@beach1234 Attending the info sessions at McCombs last year they made it pretty clear that numbers were not enough. An applicant also had to have a pretty high “Personal Index Score” - meaning that they had lots of leadership experience and other activities that made them seem a natural fit for the business school. They would need to emphasize in their essays why they were a fit for the school.

I just got an email from UT re: all the reasons my son should consider the school… is this a good sign or am I reading too much into an on-line campaign? He goes to school out of state but is a Texas resident. Top 5% of class, 3.8, 1340 SATs (the killer) but good ECs. Good enough for McCoombs? Economics/Liberal Arts (2nd choice)?

@Jennibc any insight on BHP interview? Daughter was contacted for an interview .

@and22go My son got a similar letter signed by Miguel Wasielewski of UT admissions few weeks ago. Still his application status has not changed. No idea if that letter is an indicator of anything at all.

@beach1234 Sorry, I can’t help on that front, but it seems like a good sign. That said someone else posted that BHP interviewed people last year but they weren’t accepted to UT. I think it’s tricky to ask people for any kind of input because the truth is outside of the admissions committee, everything is just a guess. Does her school rank? Rank is a big deal in figuring out the academic index.

I wouldn’t read anything into emails or letters. They are part of recruiting students to apply strategy. Tons of schools send them out. My son, because of an outlying score on the SAT, has been contacted by just about every college there is telling him to consider applying and what kind of experience he would have. We are under no delusions that those schools would automatically accept him. The more students that apply, the more they reject, the more schools rise in rankings on all those lists. Alumni love it when their schools rise on US News World Report and write bigger checks. Also they are happy to receive your application fee as it funds their departments. Imagine, getting between 50 and 90 for every application that comes through and they spend less than 10 minutes on each one. There’s a great book called “Where you Go is Not Who You Will Be” It will provide some perspective on this maddening process.

For those wondering about cockerell acceptances, I heard back from them last Thursday (11/21) and was accepted to biomedical engineering as well as plan II. I applied in early October and am autoadmit— rank 20/540, weighted gpa 4.56, sat 1530 with a fair amount of ECs (some STEM-related and some not). Good luck to everyone!

Thanks. I would not think it is the norm to be invited for BHP interview and then be declined by the University but you never know what affects the final outcome. I was wondering more about what the interview consisted of. No, her school does not rank but it would seem that once interviews are granted that they have already been through the academic review and are focusing more on fit.
