That’s interesting because I know someone who graduated from McGill and he’s now a senior executive at a Wall Street firm.

OF COURSE there r gonna be 1 or 2 ppl from mcgill or ut working on wall street. its not like theres a wall separating mcgill from wall street… all i’m saying is that its SIGNIFICANTLY harder coming from mcgill. i would say theres probably 1 in 10 000 mcgill grads who end up on wall street.

There is a ton of mythology about how you can’t get a particular job/on a particular path if you go to a Canadian school. Sure numbers work much more in your favor at one than another, but it is not at all black and white as some make it out to be: e.g. it is NOT true “you can never work at X if you go to Y”. Partly driven by the fact that most of the stuff online is written by American students and their schools, who know nothing about Canadian business schools. I personally know a significant number of students who have done internships and taken positions on Wall St. after a Canadian business school degree (I’m a professor in one).

Moreover, it’s not nearly as centralized as it appears. Even just within the US, Goldman-Sachs has been recruiting from 45 different campuses (including 35 firm wide target schools and 30 division wide target schools). They hired from 135 campuses.

For what it’s worth, here is a list of the top employers (not the only employers) hiring out of McGill:

Accenture
Air Canada
Aldo Group Inc.
BMO Capital Markets
Bombardier
CIBC
Deloitte Consulting
Deutsche Post Consulting
Export Development Corporation
GlaxoSmithKline Inc.
IBM Consulting
Johnson & Johnson
J.P. Morgan
L’Or

I’m not really sure about Montreal, but I know that Toronto has plenty of job opportunities in the finance sector, but if you’re serious about working for Wall Street in Finance, first you need to be interested in learning a lot of math. And U of Waterloo in my opinion is an excellent school for that. They have a lot of co-op opportunities for undergraduate, and a lot of people go to work for Wall Street afterward.
