University of Utah v. Millikin BFA MT

Give it to me. I want to hear from Utah and Millikin BFA MT students and parents. We’re narrowing down acceptances and I want all the info you’ve got. I’m hearing more negative than not about Denny. Tell me about your experiences with her and with the Utah program. Same with Millikin, info please… the remote location is not appealing. But does the quality of the MT program outweigh that? Help us with this decision!

One thing I will say as to “Millikin’s remote location” is that since it is in the Midwest and only threeish hours away from Chicago, there are some good industry connections there. Not a current student (prospective BFA acting, still figuring it out), but I’m from Chicago and know that Millikin students have a really good industry reputation/connections in the Midwest, where there are generally more regional theaters/opportunities than in Utah.

@mtmaybe this is helpful. Thank you. I wish you the best of luck on your decisions.

My daughter is a freshman at University of Utah. MTP students start some classes with Denny sophomore year but see her every Friday at the Demonstration(Dem) lab class where everyone periodically performs in front of her and the other instructors. My daughter said Denny’s feedback is good. The students feel Denny can be intimidating with a strong NYC personality. She currently is only casting one musical and MTP students can audition for the other musical and straight acting plays with other directors so there is exposure to multiple directors. There is a regional theater, the Pioneer, on campus and many theaters in Salt Lake that the students have auditioned for and been cast in shows. Another great thing about the U is it is rather easy to gain residency after the first year if they take one summer class so graduating without a lot of debt is possible. My daughter feels she’s really grown as a performer this year and had wonderful training. All and all it’s been a great Freshman year! Good luck deciding!

I’m als looking for feedback on Utah. Any one else out there willing to share. It’s currently the only MT program D has been accepted to - several WL but not holding our breath. It’s Utah or a different path. Impossibly difficult decision.

@mtmaybe and @JuliaVail thank you both. I appreciate your input. Every little bit of info helps!
