University of Virginia Diversity Dilemma

One of the schools I was looking to apply to this year was UVirginia, but with the white nationalist rally that is currently happening there I am completely turned off. What do you think will happen to minority enrollment (all minorities not just URM) at UVirginia

I have only seen limited news coverage of this (so maybe there is something I don’t know), but based on what I saw, I wouldn’t let this stop me from applying to UVA. It sounds like the issue arose when someone decided to remove a statue of a confederate leader from a public park in Charlottesville. UVA doesn’t really seem to have anything to do with the dispute, other than having the misfortune of being located nearby and therefore being a convenient gathering place for troublemakers. Sounds like this could have happened at any university that happens to be near the subject of something controversial.

Yeah but the media is making it seem as if this is an issue that arised in UVA. Will the media coverage affect enrollment? I called my cousin today that used to go there and she has told me about the bias she had received so this also has completely turned me off.

Has virtually nothing to do with UVa but the leader of the protest is a UVa alum. It is all about the park statue of Robert E Lee being moved.

Don’t be so quick to make judgement. Visit the school and meet with the students and professors on campus and then make a decision.

DS just texted me about being glad he chose not to go there because of this current activity.

This rally in Charlottesville had absolutely nothing to do with UVA…except that they chose to take it to Grounds last night. The rally had been planned for a park in Charlottesville for today.

It is terrible what is going on at UVA but I think for anyone to believe that UVA is supportive of it is ridiculous. It would not change my mind about attending there.

Thanks to all you people who won’t apply because of the white nationalist rally (a very atypical event). It will make it easier when my kid applies.

Yes but this is still all happening in the area. It is dangerous. And a huge turn off that activity like this is happening in the area. I was going to apply to the school but it was like my fifth choice so I probably wasn’t going to go anyway. I’m not saying UVA supports this. But every time I go down to Virginia there is always a shooting or something bad happening there. Plus I did not like the way the President of the school addressed the situation at all. And yes things like this happen everywhere but it’s very rare where I’m from.

And you guys have not answered my question. I asked would it affect enrollment especially since application season just started and UVA is being portrayed in a certain way? I didn’t ask about your opinions of whether you would go. And btw somebody has just died.

@muad_dib yeah it might increase the acceptance rate…making it less selective…which doesn’t look good

@Jlmao200 No one here has a crystal ball. No one can tell you if this will affect enrolment. You are asking the impossible.

It will affect enrollment and applications not one iota. Only Spencer is a former student, and I don’t think his having attended Chicago and Duke has influenced applications to those universities.

So sad what is happening there. What is this country doing?? Sigh…

Unanswerable.

Since the thread is already going in circles and is delving into a political discussion which is not allowed here, I’m closing this thread.
