Bump! Anyone else please?

Did you visit UNR? What did you think?

I never got to take the Nevada Bound trip yet Ncalrent! I will soon though! Apparently my 1180 SAT score can get me that 60 dollar trip for free haha. Definitely gonna take it in the spring thoughā¦

MY son is from CA and visited both UNR and UNLV. We really were impressed with UNRās facilities and major selection, not to mention the small and simple campus feel. UNLV on the other hand was a dump according to my son.

Have you ever considering moving to CA and working a year to establish residency? If you dream is to attend SDSU or any other CAL State/UC this may be the more economical way to do it. To take out huge loans to attend any out of state public school is just ridiculous.
SAC state is not worth it, most CA kids donāt want to go there. TOP CAL States:

Cal Poly and SDSU.

@DjBoom777 Did you ever visit UNR!? or made your decision between UNR and UNLV? Iām literally in the same position as you. Stuck between both schools. To go out of Vegas and experience independence but pay more than UNLV or go to UNLV for almost free and live at homeā¦

@sandiego14 SORRY I DIDNT SEE YOUR POST, but no I still havenāt been able to visit UNR since all the Nevada Bound trips have been constantly full and Iām now on my third waiting list for March 28th, hopefully I can make it before decision time by late April. Have you made any further decision on where you want to go? I just got all my financial aid packages and Iām trying to talk to my parents about living at UNLV but nothing is set in stone yet.

Oh wow, yes a lot of people are attending Nevada Bound so Iām sure the waiting list is long.
I still havenāt made my decision yet but time is running out now so Iām trying so hard to just choose the best school. I want to go to UNLV now just because Iāll be able to save money and live in a familiar area near my family; however, part of me still believes that UNR has a better academic program, itās a Tier 1 school, itās a college town, and it has an amazing science department. So I have to chooseā¦save money or better academics. @DjBoom777
Let me know how you like Reno when you visit!

@sandiego4 Iāll be sure to tell you when I go this Friday on the 28th or the next friday on the 4th! I have very similar feelings with you. UNR is clearly better than UNLV academically which should be the number one priority right? Yet Vegas has been home for so long and it would seem easier just to stay here. Another possibility I have been considering is living on-campus at UNLV so I can at least have that freshman year experience of meeting new people. Since Iām a local from Clark County, I could even get a $2000 scholarship just for living on campus! May I ask what high school you go to and what you plan on majoring in?

Is UNR affordable? Because itās better than UNLV academically indeed. College shouldnāt be a moment to fall onto your comfort zone like 40 year oldsā¦ Youāre 18! Move! Meet new people! Live on your own! Test yourself! Change! Discover the World! (or at least, another city in the state :D) Donāt be a grown high schooler while in college.
Of course, only if itās affordable. I mean, if UNLV is your only affordable possibility, then this is it. But if UNR is affordable, then itās clearly the best choice for you, especially since you have relatively strong stats and would learn more at your level there.
Is the cost of R&B too much? Will you get a grant to help with that? Is it possible for you to move out into a student apt complex sophomore year and if so how much would it save you?
Are you struggling because your parents donāt have the money?
Or are you struggling because itāll be easy, almost like high school, comfortable, with you at home, your parents taking care of the house (and you to a certain extent), etcā¦ But is it really how you see yourself living at age 20 or 21? How cool will it be to have a girlfriend and be living out of your high school bedroom?

I am actually thinking about living on campus myself. That way I can get that "out of state feel, but still go to school within an affordable price range. I will be graduating from Coronado High School and if I attend UNLV I plan on majoring in Biology with a pre-professional concentration. If I attend UNR, I will be majoring in Neuroscience. I plan on attending medical school to become a physician. @DjBoom777

@Sandiego14 A lot has happened since I last posted on this forum almost a month ago! I visited UNR on the 4th of April with a single friend and while the day trip and flight was unforgettable and funā¦ UNR didnāt disappoint nor blow me away. The city of Reno and its climate is not like Las Vegas, thatās for sure, and the campus had its low points and high points. UNRās library, student union and the courtyard/circle in the north end of campus was scenic, new and amazing while all of their dorms (except for the new Nevada LLC dorms which weāre okay) are old, cramped, poorly lit and a bit scary to be honest. I canāt really speak on the Natural or Health Sciences but I took advantage of the Civil Engineering tour and UNRās engineering seems to be very reputable and respected. The new Earthquake Testing Laboratory was state of the art and pretty cool but the main Scrugham building where most of the other labs and lectures are held was pretty dated and not too special. One rumor that was confirmed to me was how much pride the Wolf Pack has up there. You could see a lot of students wearing Nevada Shirts, Hoodies, etc. and it did feel like a unified college for the most part. We also had lunch in the Argenta Hall Cafeteria which was buffet style and all good, whether you live there or not. Finally and I say this will no doubts, UNR faculty, counselors and student ambassadors were more than welcoming and helpful. In the case of the students, you could tell they love attending that school. A week after that trip to UNR, I went to Rebel Preview at UNLV with about 4 friends (I ended up running into a lot of other people I know) and I spent just as much time on campus at UNLV as I did at UNR. Now from my own experienceā¦. I felt more comfortable at UNLV and I actually saw myself being there. The campus has more than enough greenery, contrary to what some Vegas kids expect in the desert, and they actually had as much green as UNR in some parts of campus! I fell in love with the gym, the student union and the library which were all really new, inviting and wide open. I revisited the freshman dorms at Dayton Hall and I realized that UNRās dorms were half the size of UNLVās; UNLVās dorms were palaces compared to most of UNRās older options. I took a tour of the Thomas T. Beam Engineering Complex and they were similar to UNRās in function but about two decades newer from my understanding and was good all around. As I was eating lunch and having a good time in the student union with about 8 friends, I quickly realized that I was really close to making up my mind on where Iāll be headed. That was on April 11th so I took a little over a week to decide and take a look over everything one more time from the money, the atmosphere, the pros and the cons and I ultimately chose and accepted UNLVās admission last Thursday during spring break. Iām still split on if Iām living on or off campus but in the end: Reno isnāt the right place for me and San Diego is asking for way too much money. Iām going to stay optimistic as long as I can when it comes to UNLV and Iām really hoping for the best. So thatās my story so far haha, so have you decided SanDiego14?

I am glad to hear that you have made your decision. Ultimately, your college experience will be what you make it and being optimistic is the key. It is surprising to hear your entire experience from visiting Renoās campus to UNLVās because I had just about the same reactions. I actually decided myself that Reno is not the best option for me and just like you San Diego is way too expensive. So as it comes down, UNLV is where I am now committed to. As for the dorming I did submit my housing application already, however, I have not paid my $325 to permanently reserve the room. I am a little hesitant because I am going to be the one to pay my finances off so it hurts to know I will be losing money, yet at the same time I want that freedom and full college experience. Whenever you decide to dorm or not please let me know, perhaps your decision may influence mine. @DjBoom
