UNR vs UNLV?

So, before I began… Please don’t suggest other colleges and/or universities. This is strictly about UNR and/or UNLV.

I’m an art major, BUT! I know that most schools have this, and I’m well aware of other certain institutes and specializes in that area more-so than others. Other than that, I also have an equally shared interest in computer science. Just thought I’d mention it. Anyway.

I’m unsure of what is most important to me when it comes to college life, I just know that while I was originally gonna go to UNLV, I literally just 30 minutes ago decide to actually search what kind of Universities are in Nevada (for someone who has lived in this state for most of their life, I only knew there was CSN, which I know isn’t a university but I attended there, UNLV, and the Art Institute. Please don’t ask why I’m not choosing the latter instead of UNLV/ UNR).

I suppose I could start with, I’m not financially well off, so which is more affordable? (I already know about fasfa, I haven’t applied yet but am going to, I hope no one mentions this…).

And I don’t really care too much about dorms… (I’m aware most students at UNLV commute especially around the weekends, and how the dorms at UNR are kind of small-ish, but anyway, I’m eventually going to find someplace near campus to rent.)

I’m honestly just kind of getting this over with, as you can probably tell. Not just with this forum, but also, with my education. If it was my choice and was financially stable, I would go out of state. I read a previous forum similar to this 10 minutes ago, but was dated over 5 years back (not that I’m expecting a drastic change or anything but still…). Someone else’s experience describes UNLV’s gym was somewhat impressive (I forgot about other details), but UNR having a great scenic circle, and I found it interesting that they had a buffet style cafeteria (unless if most Universities have that and I lack common sense to know…), which reminds me of what I see in the movies cx

Forgive my ignorance, but I’m picky with mascots. I think I like UNR’s Wolf Pack (other than their school spirit, not trying to imply or compare that the spirit in other communities are not high ^^"). But I can overlook the mascot, if I can be convinced the the other school is a better choice to go to than this one…

a lot of people go to UNR then end up transferring back to UNLV so they could commute from home. They cost the same in tuition, but if you could live at home, I see no reason to pick UNR over UNLV. UNR has better on-campus food by far, but UNLV has amazing options surrounding it on all sides, so you don’t really notice it as much. UNLV’s gym is beautiful though.

If you’re not a high school senior, look into going out of state. Look at colleges that give good financial aid, particularly private schools; they may end up costing less than these state schools.

COME TO UNR <3<3<3<3

It’s curious that you’re asking about qualities of the two schools, but haven’t asked which has the better ‘art’ department, or mentioned what type of art you’re interested in. Some schools focus on solely studio art, while others are more practical and emphasize graphic, photography or curatorial aspects of art.
Are you looking for a BA or BFA program?

Regardless, rather than focus on food or housing, I would encourage you first to determine which art department at the respective school best suits your particular needs, and has the best range of academic options that will prepare you for whichever concentration you’re moving toward.

Good luck.

UNR! (But I’m not a Vegas person)

If you’re interested in computer science, perhaps the digital media options at UNR would be more attractive to you?

Since money is an issue, you need to do your FAFSA, apply to both, and see if you get any scholarships.

UNR was one of the best college tours we went on (we’re from Northern California) - we toured half of the UCs and several Cal State Colleges - because the women leading the tour were very informed, truthful and happy to be there. Everywhere we looked, students were wearing school sweatshirts. Academically, I’ve heard that it is better than UNLV. The art displays seemed nice & there’s a graffiti stairwell for students to express themselves. Also they have a newer gym. Definitely check it out.

Back when I grew up in Las Vegas, UNLV was the top basketball program in the nation and the entire city was caught up in Runnin’ Rebel fever. Wow! Things have changed. Both schools are equal in cost and academics, but UNR has better school spirit and college life.
