So I got rejected from every internship I applied to (half of them lost funding, the other half I got straight out rejected) and I have basically not been doing anything this summer except from a bit of volunteering at my nearby science center and interned a bit at the Martial Arts America near my house. I have asked professors at UCSD and they all said they don't need an intern/ have no place for a high school student. I'm really concerned that I've done nothing this summer and it's really scaring me. So what should I do? I spent so much time on all these apps to be just shot down :/
I have the grades and scores for places like Stanford, but not the extracurriculars (Esp. during the summer).

Also, because my parents are divorced, I always have to spend half the summer in England where my dad lives as this is the only time I see him so I'm not able to do much during the summer anyway. Will colleges like the ivies sympathize with that?

What year are you going into? If you’re an underclassman, I wouldn’t worry at all. Most people don’t do much those summers anyway. If you’re a rising senior, I still wouldn’t be too concerned, as long as you’re doing SOMETHING with your time. Volunteering and helping out at the martial arts center sounds fine to me. And I think it’s super cool you’re spending half of your summer abroad. You might not find any internships there with such short notice, but I’m sure there will be places looking for volunteers in your area of interest (eg: clinics, libraries, etc.)

Remember that there are only 10 spots for activities on the common app and that most schools don’t care what you did with your summer. Programs like COSMOS are nice for admissions but they’re certainly not required. Best of luck!

P.S. The Shins are my favorite band

I am a rising senior, but thanks that made me feel a ton better!
And whoaaa only 10 spots for all 4 years?! I didn’t know that, that’s very cool!
I’ll just list my year round activities then.

And they’re my favorite band too, of course :)

Many schools (including Stanford) ask for 150 or so words about what you did the last two summers though. But I imagine you could simply write about your experiences abroad in an insightful way and get through that just fine.

Oh thank you for the heads up! And thank you for the assurance!
If it’s only 150 words, hopefully that shouldn’t be too bad.
Yeah, I’ll probably end up doing what you said

Wait, sorry, Stanford only asks for 50 words - Princeton’s the 150. Either way it’s pretty much nothing.

@ByLaissezFaire

And that’s it? for 2 summers? whoaa haha.
Wait so is there no section on the common app where you specifically list what you did during summer?

bump ^ Id like my question above to be answered by someone!
