Unscenic drives

I’m with you. There are definitely long stretches of “nothingness” out there around the country but even if it’s flat farmland on either side I’ll take that 100x over to the stretches of strip malls, car dealers, warehouses, stoplights every 1/4 mile.

Definitely agree with the Texas portion of I10 from San Antonio to the New Mexico state line. I have also driven “the 5” from Los Angeles to Sacramento and it is scenic in comparison.

We are headed that way for the eclipse next April. Unfortunately everywhere to stay in the hill country is either booked up or excessively expensive. So I guess we’ll be in somewhere flat and boring further west.

Yep Denver to KC is the worst.

I agree about facilities in Ohio. They are good along I 70 as well. Excellent maintenance.

Another vote for I-80 from PA to IL as an unscenic drive. I’ve driven from MA to OH, MI, IN, and IL many, many times and it never gets any better.

Another vote for this section of I-70. So boring. Not to be rivaled by the similar section north, I-80 from Denver to Omaha. However, one of the best steaks I ever had was in Salina, KS while waiting out a closed I-70 for a snowstorm!

I-80 around the south side of Chicago. Ugh.

And then you get to Davenport/Bettendorf in Iowa (on 80…), and things brighten considerably. hehe

…overpass after overpass and all the damn toll stops. There are a lot of great things to do in Chicago, things to eat, etc… but I hate toll plazas/roads, so I don’t visit nearly as often as I would without the tolls. To me they are like walls, moat, and fence, keeping me from reaching the castle. This is probably because I’ve spent almost my entire life in states that don’t torture their drivers with them.

I think the nyc metro area has done a good job eliminating many toll plazas with overpasses.

I hate I81 through Virginia because of the trucks that ride your bumper or go 25mph side by side uphill. But I think scenery wise, it’s beautiful. Beautiful, but a death trap

Breezewood - I. Hate. Breezewood! Who got paid off to divert the highway?

How about the DC Beltway. In addition to awful scenery, it’s a horrible place to drive.

I am an east coast girl. I went to CA to visit a friend and we drove from the LA area to LV. OMG. It literally made me thirsty. I am NOT a desert lover. And lots of SoCal. Minimal green. And, yes, I do know it is desert, too. I was so glad to get home to green, green and more green.

When I started reading this thread I was thinking of the I-90 route through Ohio too.

When DS was at college in NY we drove from IL to NY a number of times. DS constantly complained about the OH part of the route. It’s still a joke now.

I must say that OH had the BEST rest stops on the route. Lots of choices for food and drink, clean washrooms, room to walk for a stretch. We did actually wait til we got to OH for our lunch break.

Still way way way better than I-95 which goes through way more boring scenery and has more traffic. I do agree I-81 has a ton of trucks but I always enjoy driving it vs I-95.
