My H had to go to the GM plant a lot for work. He grew to love the city, especially the restaurants. I only went with him once.
Oh, but antelopes are beautiful. I love seeing wildlife.
I do too! The last time I drove that route I saw a herd of over 50 by my estimation! But you can’t count on seeing them .
You want ugly, try driving I-40 through Kansas. It goes through the entire state lengthwise. No scenery and no big cities to drive through for 7 hours straight.
New Jersey Turnpike from north of the Newark Airport to about Ex 11. Especially around Ex 13 with the big power plant. This is why people think that “the Garden State” is supposed to be ironic.
you mean I70 - I 40 is another winner though - from OKC to Amarillo to Albuquerque is a long 8 hours.
Yes, it’s unfortunate. And it doubles as part of I95 so plenty of chances to see it for so many travelers. The NJT as you go south isn’t "ugly’ but boring. I hate driving it anywhere. The GSParkway is much more scenic for much of its length. Though a pain with thousands (seemingly) of exit and entrance ramps to cause chaos.
Most of NJ is quite pretty.
The parkway is nice and scenic south of where it crosses the NJT but awful after that until the last few miles before it hits the NY state line. The worst is where it literally cuts through a cemetery where the gravestones come right up to the edge of the highway on each side and its obvious they had to dig up graves to build it.
I prefer the parkway over the turnpike because it has many exits (and no trucks, and nicer scenery), I’m alway afraid I’ll get stuck on the turnpike due to traffic/accidents and not be able to get off for a long time.
Yes, correct. OKlahoma…Kansas, what’s the difference?
The cemetery is an issue. But the North section of the Parkway is my home, it’s urban but I don’t think cities are ugly.
I am just not a city person. I love the wide open green spaces or even the desert. A cute small town is nice to drive through too. Hate city congestion.
except when the speed limit suddenly drops and next thing you know, a police officer is following you for two miles, waiting for confirmation about your excess and finally pulling you over.
“Unscenic” is in the eye of the beholder. When I was preparing to drive my middle school D to northern Michigan for camp, I was asked to take a young woman from a nearby city. She was from an underprivileged community. It’s a pretty blah drive … road, fields, trees, not much to break it up. But the young woman was absolutely mesmerized the whole drive. She had never seen cows in fields along the highway. She had never seen hay bales. The highway rest stop blew her mind. She didn’t find the drive boring at all!
Excellent point.
I don’t go too fast. I literally don’t remember the last time I got a speeding ticket. Must’ve been in my 20s.
I did get pulled twice about 10 and 12 years ago. One I got a warning because my license plate holder was too big and the other time I got a warning because my registration was about to expire but hadn’t yet. And yes those guys were totally looking for someone to pull over and hoped to catch me speeding but I saw them first!
I would rather see trees and cows than industrial grunge. That’s very relaxing and calm to me.
My D22’s girlfriend recently posed the question where is your favorite place in the US. She loves cities and NYC is her favorite, but I think I am just more of a medium sized town person. So bring on the trees and fields for me.
Some cityscapes are just beautiful, others (most in my opinion) meh, and others are ugly. It’s a horrible drive but coming out of Kentucky into Cincinnati is gorgeous. I like Chicago’s skyline but simply hate driving through it. The entire drive through town is rather awe inspiring though. I guess I don’t like driving through Atlanta but that’s mostly due to the traffic. The city view doesn’t do much to make up for it. The scenery driving through cities is very dependent on the direction you approach it from. Cincinnati from the north is just a normal view of a mid sized city. The ugly cities are just run down.
Yeah, I have not driven in Chicago, but I have driven in NYC, Atlanta, DC, LA, New Orleans, St Louis, San Francisco, Seattle and many, many others. I can drive on 95/Jersey Turnpike and I can drive on the 405 in LA, but dang give me the prairies and deserts any day.
I think I’m going to start a new thread on favorite drives, whether scenic or unscenic.
I’m heading for Virginia this weekend – I-81, here I come!
