Unsure about what to study

I have been thinking about studying music in college, something along the lines of a Bachelor of Arts in Music. I was thinking about that route because I necessarily didn’t want to do a Bachelor of Music and do all music related classes because I wanted to do some other classes as well. But now I’m wondering if I should just do a Bachelor of Music instead of a Bachelor of Arts in Music because I don’t know how much of a workload I would be able to handle, and at this point I don’t feel like dealing with homework for non music-related classes. Also, I’m starting to have some self-doubt as to whether or not I should be studying music because I enjoy creative writing and I feel like I would want to take some classes related to that as well in college. So at this point I have no clue what I want to study or where I want to go to college. I’m currently taking a gap year, but I have not started seriously looking into colleges (or applying to any colleges for that matter) and I’m getting stressed out because I feel like I should be applying to colleges and starting college next fall. But I don’t think that’s going to happen because I have no clue what I want to study or where I want to go to college. Also, I’m not sure how my parents would view this if my gap year turned into two years.

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

You do not have to be certain about what you want to study before attending most colleges. It sounds to me as if you would benefit most from a school that offers both a good music program and creative writing. You might also check distribution requirements and find a school that has fewer so that you can focus on two majors or a major/minor. It is also possible to study English/creative writing and continue music with lessons and extracurricular performance.

. We don’t know anything about your qualifications or finances. Many state universities would fit the bill. On the other side of the spectrum, I could list many schools that would be good for you: Kenyon, Bard, Vassar, Bennington, Sarah Lawrence, Clark, Lewis and Clark- any of the Colleges that Change Lives schools (see the website).

Do you want large or small, urban or rural? What kind of “vibe”: artsy, alternative, or traditional?

Please don’t delay starting college because you are not absolutely sure about what you want to study. Just get on campus. Make sure the BA is an option: that would seem to suit you best. Take classes in areas you are interested in and explore, then go from there.
