UofChicago

Very informative. Thank you idad. :)

well said scrapiron!

...and where do you pull these things out of idad? Not that I don't appreciate it- you just happen to have a lot of articles on the UofC.

As far as Chicago not being well known, I think it's all depends on where you're from. I mean, I live in the northern suburbs of Chicago, and I've always been pretty well acquainted with the school + its so well known around here that when ever I tell someone that I'm going to UofC next year, they launch into a little speech in praise of the school. Mostly, that's because of the proximity- obviously if you're from the East Coast, the UofC's reputation is going to be obscured by the ivies and the old LAC's etc.

And if you're from the Deep South, people stare at you when you say you're applying to places like University of Chicago and University of Michigan..."Why are you applying there? Of course you'll get in!" It annoys the heck out of me...people who don't know the names of half the schools I'm applying to and assume that they're in the same tier as Alabama state schools.

yeah that would be annoying. For the most part people here (saint paul, MN) know the level of U of C. Other prestigious schools are, like u of c, thought to be other schools here in mn. For example, everyone thinks that cornell is cornell college in iowa and that brown is brown college, a community college in minneapolis. WashU is also commonly thought to be university of washington.

Bah, you guys are all worried abotu name recognition. Just be glad if you get in and can get a godo education. Who cares where you go for undergrad, it really won't matter as much when you're trying to find a job.

I'm not a big "name" person, but I do get slightly peeved when people ask me where I'm going and then say "Oh, UIC!? Cool!"

No, U*of*C. They're completely different schools.

But it is prestegious enough so that some people have been known to lie about getting in...which also peeves me a bit.

Hah, i'm sure by lying about getting into Chicago is a form of flattery, since you know that everyone wants to be there.
