UofMinn Monologues

Hello! I am applying primarily for musica theatre BFAs and some Acting ones that suite what I’m interested in. I live in Minnesota and the UofM is a great program, they have dance and optional voice lesson components too. Anyway, I was wondering what people choose for their third monologue for their audition. This is the one where it says “Choose something from a role that others would probably never cast you as, but that you would love to play and feel passionate about. Think as broadly and creatively as possible - you can go beyond age and type”

This sounds like a fun and great opportunity to stand out as an artist. I am considering using a cut of Adam Byck’s monologue from Assassins. I’m not sure if this is what they’re looking for. It’s slightly out of my age and type but it’s not extreme. It is an untraditional audition choice because it’s a Sondheim and it’s from; a musical and it’s a little mature for my age or the audition setting. However, I think it could work despite the lack of creativeness (that’s a real world) because it’s a monologue and character I’m passionate about and couldn’t use in any of my other auditions.

Thanks guys and happy new year

My D auditioned there, as did several of her friends (2 of them ended up there.) two years ago. they used the 3rd piece as an opportunity to do something that they would NEVER get to do. Examples: one (Caucasian) boy did a monologue from Raisin in the Sun, a girl did Tom from Glass Menagerie, that sort of thing. I wish more schools did this- it was my favorite audition directive- really gets kids thinking creatively

It does seem like a great creative opportunity but I’m not sure if Sam Assassins is outside the box enough.

Just my opinion- doesn’t seem like a BIG stretch. It would be a role you could play within 10 years…

Yes I agree. It’s less of a stretch but more of the passion that they’re looking for. It’s a dream role and I wish I could use the monologue in any of my other auditions but maybe it won’t work in this one either.

Sorry! Someday its time will come!

Thank you for the optimism! I’m sure my puppy gets a kick out being my audience for it for now. I’m sure I can find something I’m equally, if not more, passionate about.

Good luck, @ParachuteBoy, it sounds like a fascinating exercise.
