Eg1, my D just turned 16 & she's been playing in bars for a couple years. But the traditional Irish music scene is more commonly Irish football players drinking Guiness while their toddlers do step dancing -- a family & fun atmosphere. Either H or I or the whole family go along for a meal & a pint.

She's a huge fan of improv, so we bring her to Manhattan clubs. But again, only accompanied by me or H. So far, she hasn't objected to being chaperoned.

when I read your description of your D a great major popped into my head...Entertainment Management..not as limited as Music Business...I wouldnt recommend S's school to her..hes at U South Carolina in Columbia...not a music scene area at all...but his "college" at the U,where his Sports Management major is housed also has majors in Live Entertainment management (he's taken the intro class). Its more all encompassing than simply music.S is becoming interested in venue/facility management and is combining his major with working for the student run board at the U (called Carolina Productions) which books the acts/speakers/bands/comedians who play the school. He wants booking experience and contract negotiation experience. It sounds like your D already has some experience like that from her HS radio .Would something like this interest her, perhaps in a indie friendly market?

As for OSU, Central Ohio really does have a much better concert scene than we get credit for. If you do a campus tour, maybe she'd like to pop in to see who's at Newport, across the street from the Ohio Union (their campus community center, I think). Most of the bands there would be of the semi-popular persuasion, but if you stay in the area, there are a million clubs/cafes down High Street to check out where more local/underground bands would be playing.

I just remembered- Quirky with a contemporary music program: The College of Santa Fe.

Hey, deceptacon - you don't need to convince me! When we toured the campus at OSU we had the tour guide inform us about local venues (and then visited them later.)

Actually, when we were at the information session for Ohio State the admissions counselor had every kid there say what the word "Columbus" meant to them. Most of the attendees said "big" or "sports", but my own DD said "Warped Tour" (since I guess Columbus is the traditional kick-off for the Midwest leg of the tour.) The counselor told us later that he'd never heard that response before (and of course he remembered DD's name.) That's my kid!

In upstate New York, also take a look at Syracuse (music industry major). Ithaca College has a good radio station, lively music scene and strong communications, but it is in a somewhat rural location.
